Conical hats, bronze drums, sedge mats, etc. are traditional handicraft products in many localities in the province that have affirmed their good quality and are favored by consumers. Currently, in addition to promoting product consumption, production establishments are also interested in investing in the application of science and technology in production, contributing to improving the quality and competitiveness of products.
Production of handicraft products in Nga Son town.
Quang Xuong district has long been famous for its sedge growing and mat weaving. With the strength of raw materials, localities in the district have encouraged, motivated, and created conditions for establishments with passion for the profession to borrow capital to expand production, invest in buying mat weaving machines, improve product quality, thereby creating jobs and bringing stable income to thousands of local workers. Ms. Le Thi Duc, Quang Phuc commune, one of the senior sedge mat weavers in Ngoc Binh village, said: "Sedge mats are made from two main materials: sedge and jute. Mat weaving is not too difficult, but it is very hard because it has to go through many meticulous stages from harvesting sedge, classifying, drying... to weaving. According to her, when weaving mats, the worker must have skillful hands to put the sedge into the weaving mold according to the rules so that it is fast and even, avoiding breaking the thread. After weaving, the process of sewing the edge of the mat will continue with suitable fabrics, creating beautiful designs and durability for the product... Previously, most of the stages, workers had to do manually, however, facing the challenges of the market, requiring more quantity of goods, beautiful designs, and durable quality, my family has invested in buying mat weaving machines, cover sewing machines, expanding the production workshop... Therefore, the production time has also been shortened, creating more products with better quality".
It is known that Quang Xuong district currently has nearly 500 mat weaving machines, with an annual output of about 3 million pairs of mats. The products are diverse in design with many types of high-quality mats such as: color printed mats, printed mats... and some products such as handbags, floor mats... Therefore, they not only attract customers in and outside the province but are also exported to countries such as China, Laos, Thailand...
Currently, handicraft production is one of the effective occupations, creating jobs for nearly 16,000 workers in the province with an income of about 4 to 12 million VND/person/month. To increase the value of products, production facilities in many craft villages in the province have actively applied scientific and technological advances, innovated equipment, and gradually replaced manual activities or outdated machinery and technology that pollute the environment. Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, owner of a wooden furniture production facility in Hoang Dat commune (Hoang Hoa) said: "Investing in modern machinery such as chisels, carving machines... in production is the solution that most local production households choose to preserve and develop the profession. Currently, 100% of carpentry production facilities in the commune have applied science and technology in production stages, such as: sawing, drilling, polishing, spraying paint... contributing to improving labor productivity and saving production costs. In addition, to improve the competitiveness of products, many facilities in the commune have created soft carvings, curved lines... which are favored by consumers".
However, to improve the quality of handicraft products, localities need to focus on training and vocational training for workers, especially young and skilled workers. Local authorities need to create conditions to support production facilities to access support policies and preferential loans to invest in improving technology, equipping modern machinery and equipment... For production facilities, it is necessary to change their thinking, production methods, business forms, and be proactive in approaching and researching the possibility of applying technology suitable to the actual production situation. In addition, it is necessary to change the practice of fragmented, small-scale production and manual production to form industrial-scale production organizations to increase operational efficiency; constantly improve designs, create many new and unique products; develop traditional products suitable to the needs and tastes of customers. Along with that is creating new products that meet the needs but must integrate cultural values into the products; avoid environmental pollution; pay attention to building brands, improving product competitiveness...
