'Snow White' loses to 'The Possessed'

(PLVN) - The musical film "Snow White" had a dismal opening revenue at the Vietnamese box office with 5.69 billion VND, far behind the 11.4 billion VND of the Vietnamese horror film "The Invaders".

Last week, the Vietnamese box office continued to witness the dominance of the movie "Quy nhap trang" (starring Quang Tuan and Kha Nhu) on the box office revenue chart.

According to Box Office Vietnam (an independent statistics unit), despite entering its third week of screening, the horror film with familiar cultural material still maintains its strong appeal, earning more than 11.42 billion VND, out of a total of 5,578 screenings, 129,687 tickets sold. Up to now, "Quy nhap trang" has pocketed 139.9 billion VND, becoming the most popular horror film on Vietnamese screens.

Although the film has many sensational elements to attract audiences, it still has flaws in the script. The twists at the end of the film are criticized for being unconvincing, while the acting of the cast is only average.

Meanwhile, “Snow White” - a film that caused controversy right from the moment its cast and modern feminist message were announced - only earned a mere VND5.69 billion at the Vietnamese box office last week with 53,231 tickets sold in 3,240 screenings.

Internationally, the film’s revenue also did not show many positive signs. According to Variety, “Snow White” earned $16 million on its first day of release (March 21) and test screenings. It is expected to end its opening week with more than $45 million in North America. This is not a bad number, but with a budget of more than $250 million, the film is predicted to have difficulty in recovering its capital.

"Snow White" has a high production budget but its revenue is not as expected.

Meanwhile, two Korean films, “The Extremely Funny Assassin” and “The Extremely Difficult Profession,” also made their mark at the box office.

“The Extremely Funny Assassin” - a film combining action and comedy, bringing valuable moments of entertainment to the audience, grossing 3.85 billion VND from 41,927 tickets sold in 2,047 screenings. Meanwhile, “The Extremely Difficult Profession” also debuted with 3.24 billion VND in revenue, 32,848 tickets sold in 1,731 screenings. The film is considered to have light content, suitable for the taste of audiences who love entertaining films.

Notably, “Interstellar” still firmly holds its position in the top 5 with a revenue of 2.6 billion VND despite only 84 screenings and 14,394 tickets sold.

Christopher Nolan’s film continues to be the most successful re-release phenomenon in Vietnam, especially on IMAX format where screenings are almost always full. This proves the lasting appeal of classic cinema works, when a film more than a decade old can still attract a large audience to the cinema.

On the morning of March 24 alone, "The Pit of Death" even surpassed "The Ghost in the Inner Palace" to lead the box office in daily revenue, while the current screenings only reached 32.

Overall, the Vietnamese box office last week did not have many major fluctuations, as the positions on the chart remained almost unchanged. The fact that "Quy Nhap Trang" led the box office for 3 consecutive weeks shows that Vietnamese films, especially spiritual and horror films, combined with familiar folk cultural elements, still have appeal to audiences. However, this is not an accurate measure to evaluate the quality of the works.

This week, “The Yin and Yang Road” – another Vietnamese spiritual horror film about the profession of an ambulance driver will officially hit theaters. In addition, works such as “Finding the Body: Headless Ghost”, “Detective Kien” or “Ut Lan: Oan Linh Giu Co”… also received the attention of the audience when they were “stirring” to hit theaters.

Whether these films can create a new fever and change the box office race as well as change the "lucky with the right timing" perspective of Vietnamese horror films, still needs time to answer.
