The first capital of the coastal city

In the feudal history of Vietnam, the Mac Dynasty was one of the dynasties that ruled for only 66 years (1527 - 1592) but left many marks and historical relics on the coastal strip of the North. The most prominent is the land of Duong Kinh (Hai Phong) which is considered the first capital of the coastal people built by the Mac Dynasty.

History books record: The Mac Dynasty was founded by the founder Mac Dang Dung (1483-1541). He was from Co Trai village, Nghi Duong district, Kinh Mon prefecture, Hai Duong town (now Co Trai village, Ngu Doan commune, Kien Thuy district, Hai Phong city). He was a descendant of famous scholars of the Tran dynasty such as Mac Hien Tich and Mac Dinh Chi.

Although he was born into a poor family, he had a talent for martial arts, so he passed the exam to recruit brave soldiers and spent more than 20 years of his life serving under 4 Le kings. During that time, he achieved many feats and took command of the army of the whole country.

The Mac Dynasty had 5 kings: Mac Dang Dung (1527 - 1529), Mac Dang Doanh (1530 - 1540), Mac Phuc Hai (1541 - 1546), Mac Phuc Nguyen (1547 - 1561) and Mac Mau Hop (1562 - 1592). By early 1593, the Mac Dynasty officially ended under the Le-Trinh army, marking 66 years of reign.

During that 66-year period, the Mac Dynasty introduced many economic reform and development policies to make people's lives prosperous and society stable. The Mac Dynasty did not follow the policy of "emphasizing agriculture and suppressing commerce" like the early Le Dynasty, but it was able to strengthen the economy of the Northeast region with the development of handicrafts and commerce, typically the ceramics of the Mac Dynasty reached the markets of Southeast Asia and the Middle East countries... The Mac Dynasty was also known as "Mac Thi worshiped Confucianism", respected Confucian scholars, many exams were held despite the constant war. During the Mac Dynasty, many talented people appeared, typically among the talented people of the country at that time were Doctor Nguyen Thi Due and Trang Trinh Nguyen Binh Khiem.

At the Mac Dynasty Memorial Site, there are still precious antiques being preserved here such as: a vase with images of the One Pillar Pagoda and cranes; the Dai Hong Chung bell weighing 1,527 kg; a bronze gong engraved with 2 dragons; especially the Bao Long sword (also known as Dinh Nam sword) - considered a "500-year-old national treasure". In early 2020, the Dinh Nam sword was recognized by the Prime Minister as a national treasure.
