These days, early in the morning, people in Quang Binh call each other to go into the cajuput forest to pick mushrooms. This type of mushroom usually grows under the cajuput tree, so it is called cajuput mushroom.
People in Quang Binh pick mushrooms to sell at the market, the price ranges from 50,000 - 100,000 VND/kg.
Ms. Tran Thi Ly (born in 1984, in Quang Luu commune, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) has been picking and selling mushrooms for nearly 20 years. Sharing with Dan Viet newspaper, Ms. Ly said: "Since I was little, I followed my mother to pick mushrooms to eat. When I grew up and married someone near my house, this is also a job for me to earn extra income."
According to Ms. Ly, Melaleuca mushrooms usually grow after rains around the fourth to eighth lunar months. This type of mushroom grows discreetly under dry Melaleuca leaves, so you have to dig with your hands to find it.
Quang Binh people carry mushrooms in their bags to the market to sell.
Plump mushrooms with purple buds are popular with people to buy and eat.
"To go pick mushrooms, sometimes I have to bring lunch in the forest. This season, mushrooms are plentiful so there are many people picking them. All I need is a basket and a bag to carry them and I can go digging for mushrooms all day. There was a day when I picked nearly 100 kg and asked my husband to drive in to pick them up and sell them," said Ms. Ly.
Many people peel off the dirt on the mushrooms, clean them, and then sell them.
Melaleuca mushrooms grow very quickly and also fade quickly. The mushrooms have purple buds, smooth white inside, are delicious and easy to sell. However, mushrooms that bloom large and turn brown will become soft and difficult to sell. Currently, local people are selling them for 50,000 - 100,000 VND/kg depending on the type of Melaleuca mushroom.
When people buy Melaleuca mushrooms, they will stir-fry them. Many people often stir-fry this type of mushroom with vegetables and a little shrimp and squid to create a delicious dish. Melaleuca mushrooms are more bitter the more they taste, because they will have a sweet aftertaste.
