“The ATACMS systems will arrive, but Washington’s plans to provide this type of weapon could change,” a US official said.
Meanwhile, another US administration official said the ATACMS transfer was “under discussion” and that the missile could be included in the US’ new military aid package to Ukraine.
The source said the US has not made a final decision and Ukraine may have to wait several more months to receive ATACMS.
ATACMS is a long-range guided missile manufactured by the American arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin.
This type of missile can also be launched from high-mobility artillery rocket systems such as the M270 and M142 HIMARS that Ukraine currently has.
The latest versions of ATACMS can hit targets at distances of up to 310 km with an error of just 1 meter.
Lockheed Martin estimates that about 4,000 ATACMS missiles have been built since the 1980s.
Previously, in July 2022, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the US would not provide ATACMS to Ukraine because of concerns that they would be used to attack Russian territory.
