Reuters on February 16 quoted US Congressman Michael McCaul as saying that US and Russian officials will meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to begin negotiations to end the nearly 3-year war in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who met with US Vice President JD Vance in Germany on February 14, said Ukraine was not invited to the talks in Saudi Arabia and Kyiv would not cooperate with Moscow before consulting with strategic partners.
According to Congressman McCaul, the US officials who will be traveling to Saudi Arabia include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff. It is not clear who they will meet with on the Russian side.
On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, Mr McCaul said the aim of the talks was to arrange a meeting between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Zelensky "to finally bring peace and end this conflict".
Talks between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia are planned, a source confirmed.
On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on February 15, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said the US had asked what European countries could contribute to ensuring Ukraine's security.
Previously, some sources revealed that the US had sent a dispatch asking about issues including the possibility of contributing soldiers in the future.
A US State Department spokesman said Washington "has made clear that we expect European partners to take the lead in establishing a sustainable security framework and look forward to their proposals".
"A strong, self-reliant Europe is in their interests and ours," the spokesman said.
Washington has asked European allies for information on weapons, peacekeepers and security measures they could provide to Ukraine, the Financial Times reported.
Regarding Mr. Trump's plan on the Ukraine issue, Special Envoy Kellogg said on February 15 that it was still too early to say when the plan would be ready, because Mr. Trump's administration had only been in office for 25 days.
Mr Kellogg added that it was important to involve Russian President Vladimir Putin in negotiations to end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
