Some small traders said that the reason for the sharp increase in vegetable prices is due to the impact of continuous heavy rains from last week until now, which has caused many vegetable areas to be flooded and damaged, resulting in a shortage of many types of vegetables, especially green vegetables.
Vegetable growing areas have been hit by continuous heavy rains, causing vegetables to be damaged and not as fresh as before, limiting the supply of many types of vegetables, especially green vegetables. In addition, with unfavorable weather conditions, some suburban areas of Hanoi such as Dong Anh, Me Linh, Quoc Oai... have been flooded, making transportation and preservation more difficult.

Sharing with reporters, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha, a trader at Van Quan wholesale market, Ha Dong, said: Heavy rain in the past few days has caused flooding in vegetable fields, reducing productivity and affecting the ability to harvest. The quantity of vegetables is therefore not enough to supply the market, leading to high prices. Due to the dependence on the weather, the prices of green vegetables also change every day. Meanwhile, some summer-autumn vegetables that are about to end their season, such as Malabar spinach, amaranth, etc., have also decreased in output; winter vegetables that have just been planted have not yet been harvested.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, a trader at Trung Liet market (Dong Da district) said that the increase in vegetable prices at wholesale markets has led to an increase in the selling price to consumers. The high price of vegetables has caused people to buy less vegetables than before. Ms. Hien said that vegetable prices will remain high for the next 2 weeks due to the unusual weather and the upcoming storm season.
The increase in vegetable prices not only affects the trading activities of small traders but also makes it difficult for many housewives to serve daily meals. Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong (Yet Kieu ward, Ha Dong district) shared: Normally, my family of 4 buys vegetables for about 20,000 VND, but now, each meal going to the market to buy a few bunches of vegetables with some onions and cilantro costs 35,000 VND. I have to go to the market early to buy vegetables from people in the countryside, or go to the wholesale market to buy them at a slightly cheaper price.
Also "worried" about the increase in vegetable prices, Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet (Khuong Trung ward, Thanh Xuan district) shared: I just bought green onions for 8,000 VND, while previously, the same amount of vegetables, I only bought for 5,000 VND. Now going to the market, the money to buy vegetables alone is nearly 40,000 VND. Seeing that the prices of tubers and fruits are lower, today I bought more instead of buying green vegetables like before.
