Many potentials and advantages but medical tourism is still in its infancy
On the afternoon of April 15, the Danang Medical Association coordinated with the Department of Health, the Department of Tourism and the City Tourism Association to organize a workshop on “Developing medical tourism in Danang”. This is also the first time that the two health and tourism sectors of Danang have organized a workshop on a field that the city has a lot of potential and advantages but has not yet fully exploited.
Director of Da Nang Department of Health Tran Thanh Thuy deployed the plan to develop medical tourism in the city for the period 2025 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.
Da Nang has a developed healthcare system, a high-quality healthcare workforce, modern facilities, transportation and tourism infrastructure, and many international events and festivals. At the same time, its rich natural resources, unique culture, and clean living environment are important factors that create the attraction for healthcare tourism.
“With its many potentials and advantages, Da Nang is fully qualified to become a leading medical tourism center in the Central region and the whole country. However, the reality shows that the medical tourism model in Da Nang is still in its infancy and does not really have a close connection between the fields,” commented Dr. Ngo Thi Kim Yen.
Developing medical tourism
At the workshop, the Department of Health of Da Nang deployed the medical tourism development plan for the period 2025 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 according to Decision 1060/QD-UBND (March 31, 2025) of the People's Committee of Da Nang City (Plan 1060) to improve the quality of medical services to develop medical tourism in the area commensurate with the potential and advantages of the city.
Accordingly, by 2030, strive to have over 50% (over 15/29) of district hospitals and medical centers have areas qualified to care for international guests; have at least 2 medical examination and treatment facilities under the Department of Health meeting at least one international standard on professional capacity and quality of medical services (common international medical standards often applied in Asia such as JCI (USA), ACHSI (Australia), HAS (France), DNV GL (Norway), ISO, CAS (Canada), CHKS (UK), Temos (Germany) and some other international medical standards).
Thien Nhan Hospital's high-quality medical examination and treatment packages for medical tourism attracted much attention from delegates attending the conference.
Plan 1060 also sets a target that by the end of 2026, Da Nang will deploy at least 5 medical tourism service packages combining medical examination and treatment, health care, tourism and resort tourism. From the second quarter of 2028, at least 10 medical tourism service packages will be deployed; from the second quarter of 2023, at least 15 of the above medical tourism service packages will be deployed.
Develop and deploy an online appointment management and booking system, providing information on medical tourism service packages (possibly combined with online health consultation) for hospitals and medical centers serving medical tourism at public health facilities before 2027. Develop new or integrate into existing multilingual online applications to provide information on local medical tourism services to international visitors.
Promote medical tourism on the city's media channels, introduce medical tourism at domestic and international fairs and exhibitions every year. Strive to increase the rate of foreign visitors using medical services in the city by at least 5% each year from 2026 compared to the previous year.
According to Dr. Ngo Thi Kim Yen, Da Nang aims to build a feasible, effective medical tourism development map that is suitable for the city's specific conditions. Many initiatives at the workshop will be concretized into action programs and specific projects, contributing to shaping a unique medical tourism model of Da Nang, with its own identity and competitive enough on the national and regional medical tourism map.
