Contractors of 10 components of the North-South Expressway Phase 2 (from Ha Tinh to Khanh Hoa) have been working overtime, adding resources, and turning things around. Many projects have shortened their progress by 3-6 months. Materials are no longer a concern for the Can Tho-Ca Mau Expressway project.
Positive signals after construction site pressure
Wrapping up 2024, Colonel Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Commander of Corps 12 and Deputy General Director of Truong Son Construction Corporation, welcomed reporters with a rare bright face: "On the North-South Expressway, we have mastered the progress of all 5 construction packages."
Rather than exceeding or meeting the schedule, the commander carefully used the word "mastery". Before that, engineers and workers of Truong Son had to go through "brain-wracking" days.
Like the Van Ninh - Cam Lo project, this is the project that recorded the most positive changes in Truong Son. In this project, the most complicated item is the An Ma 2 bridge with 11 spans, installed on a steep mountainside, with extremely difficult construction conditions.
But it was not until February 2024, more than a year after construction began, that the contractor received the site. When it did, there was no access road.
"My Duc Bridge with 6 spans is in the same situation when the site will not be handed over until June 2024. Meanwhile, the project was directed to shorten the progress by 3-6 months, the executive director once intended to resign from the command position because he was too worried," Mr. Tuan Anh recalled.
After that, the Command leaders encouraged the executive board, worked with the local authorities to analyze the situation, and handle the bottlenecks.
"Racing against time, the local authority handed over the site, received it the day before and the next afternoon we started working immediately. The construction solution was calculated and changed.
By the time of the New Year, the two bridges were basically ready to open to traffic. From a production capacity of 30% at the beginning of the year, the construction value rapidly increased to more than 70% by the end of 2024," said Colonel Nguyen Tuan Anh.
Stick to the construction site, forget the day off
In the last week of 2024, after neatly arranging his work in Hanoi, Mr. Le Thang, Director of Project Management Board 2, "carried his backpack" to the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon construction site.
Mr. Thang's trips were not only to grasp the situation and work with the locality, but also to encourage and motivate his brothers to stick to the challenging "battlefield".
"In the past year, up to 5 heads of executive boards have resigned or asked to transfer to other projects due to work pressure," Mr. Thang explained.
Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon is the longest project, and also the most complicated project among the 12 component projects of the North - South Expressway Phase 2. The terrain is long, the number of members of the executive board is only about 13 - 15 people.
Every day when they wake up, the management team starts a series of continuous working hours of about 13 - 15 hours. There are people who only go home 4 - 5 days out of 30 days a month. Due to the large workload, many people choose to leave the construction site.
Putting aside the shortcomings, according to the leader of Project Management Board 2, in 2024, the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon project will also have positive signals after the tireless efforts of the investor and contractor.
From June to August 2024, the site was cleared, with peak months when the value of work on site reached 500 billion VND, 1.5 - 2 times higher than previous months.
"Secret" from phase 1 highway
From the Dien Chau - Bai Vot expressway construction site of the North - South expressway project phase 1, Mr. Vo Van Hoang, Deputy General Director of Cienco4 Group, was soon mobilized by the leadership to the North - South expressway project phase 2, Bung - Van Ninh section to develop an acceleration plan.
To connect the entire North-South expressway in the East by 2025, reaching the 3,000km milestone, there is still a lot of work to do.
Attached to the construction site, thousands of engineers and workers have spent many Tet holidays away from their loved ones and hometowns. However, we believe that everyone will be extremely happy to contribute to building and extending the roads, bringing the country into a new era.

Taking on nearly 16km of the main route of the project, according to Mr. Hoang, at the beginning of 2024, the land clearance problem was the biggest bottleneck, and the coordination of roadbed excavation and embankment was extremely difficult.
From the lesson learned from the North-South Expressway Phase 1, the Executive Board of Cienco4, together with the investor and local authorities, established teams to visit each household to mobilize and support temporary accommodation costs so that people could rent temporary accommodation and not have to wait for houses to be built in the resettlement area before the site is handed over.
"The most memorable is the land acquisition work in Mr. Binh's household at Km 638+200 in Dung Cam residential group, Viet Trung Farm town.
From June to August 2024, the contractor pulled up equipment three times to wait for the construction of the main line but had to return because the people did not agree. It was not until September 12, 2024, after many dialogues and campaigns, that this household handed over," Mr. Hoang recalled.
Also "pocketing" experience from the tense days in phase 1, Colonel Nguyen Tuan Anh said that when moving to the North-South expressway project phase 2, the contractor was in a different mindset. Progress was accelerated right from the beginning.
"The goal is to quickly complete favorable projects first to focus on slower projects. For example, at the Bung - Van Ninh project, Truong Son worked day and night, and before Tet, the main route was ready for traffic, shortening the progress by 8 months," the leader shared.
"Overcoming the sun, overcoming the rain" is not just a slogan
In late December 2024, returning to Hanoi after inspecting the construction status of some component projects of the North-South Expressway Phase 2, Mr. Nguyen The Minh, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction Investment Management (Ministry of Transport) shared: "The construction site has had a big change".
According to Mr. Minh, with its special significance, the North-South Expressway project continues to receive special attention from Government leaders. In 2024 alone, the Prime Minister personally visited 11 times to inspect, remove difficulties, encourage and motivate engineers and workers.
Five of those times, the Prime Minister visited the Can Tho - Ca Mau section project. After each trip, the head of the Government gave specific instructions, assigning tasks to each ministry, branch, and locality.
By the end of November 2023, localities had only handed over about 673km of land for the project (93%), the total construction output of the project was only approximately 15% of the contract value. Sand filling materials are still a major concern in the Can Tho - Ca Mau section project.
By early December 2024, the site clearance work had been basically completed at 99.96%. Construction output reached nearly 61% of the contract value. The supply of sand materials for the construction of the Can Tho - Ca Mau section was determined to be sufficient with reserves meeting the requirements.
"The construction atmosphere became even more bustling after the Prime Minister launched a 500-day and night competition to complete 3,000km of highway. The number of human resources and equipment mobilized to the construction site increased by 1.2 - 1.5 times, rotating "3 shifts, 4 crews", overcoming the weather challenges.
"Only by seeing workers stretch tarpaulins in the rain and construct expansion joints on the bridge deck can one clearly feel the spirit of "overcoming the sun and defeating the rain" is no longer just a slogan.
At every construction site now, there are orders from the heart, sacrifices of personal joy, and contractors willing to pay extra costs and change construction solutions to quickly clear the main road," Mr. Minh confided.
