Farmers discuss business

In 2016, from the initiative of the former Secretary of Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee, longan farmers in An Nhon Commune, Chau Thanh District voluntarily established the first Canh Tan Association in Dong Thap Province to discuss farming and business. The association operates effectively, bringing many benefits to its members.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of Canh Tan Hoi Quan, said that in the past 6 years, Canh Tan Hoi Quan has gathered farmers in the region, connecting them in village and neighborhood spirit. People discuss business together, gradually change production practices, apply scientific and technological advances to increase productivity and product quality, bring high economic efficiency, and contribute to the development of their homeland. From the Hoi Quan, in December 2017, An Hoa Safe Agricultural Products Cooperative was established, opening a new direction for longan farmers.

Mr. Phan Thanh Hung, Chairman of the Association of Tourism Associations in Tan Quy Dong Ward, Sa Dec City, said: "At first, I only knew how to grow flowers to sell, but since joining the Association of Tourism Associations in 2019 and doing additional tourism, income has increased more than 10 times on the same area, with some years earning up to 10 billion VND. Currently, the Association has linked together, creating attractive tourism routes and signed cooperation agreements with travel businesses. The Association members have pooled capital to open a travel company, creating stable jobs for more than 20 workers."

Thanks to its effective operation and many benefits for its members, the number of guilds in Dong Thap has increased rapidly. Up to now, the whole province has 145 guilds in most communes and wards, with more than 7,500 members, operating in the following types: rice production, vegetables, fruit trees, ornamental flowers, pangasius farming, eel farming, dried fish production, multi-industry business, tourism... There have been 38 cooperatives established from the guilds to link production and business on a large scale, aiming to improve the industry value chain.

Creating multi-value agricultural products

According to Mr. Le Thanh Cong, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dong Thap province, the association clubs were voluntarily established based on the actual needs of the members. Farmers joined the association clubs to exchange experiences, production techniques, update market information and find partners. The association clubs are self-financing, members think together, work together, and enjoy together in the spirit of volunteerism and self-management. The journey of the Red Lotus Association Club model aims at self-change for the people of Dong Thap. The association club model has helped farmers strongly change their thinking from agricultural production to agricultural economy.

Mr. Pham Thien Nghia, Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee, said that the establishment of the association model has maximized the effectiveness of gathering farmers to change their thinking and change their way of doing business from small-scale, fragmented production to cooperation and association with enterprises to form large-scale production areas, in order to meet market demand and increase value on the same unit area; strongly develop the circular economic model, linked with the start-up movement, create multi-value agricultural products, contribute to improving people's lives, and change the face of the countryside. This is considered a great effort in community institutions with a voluntary, self-managed model...

"In the coming time, for the association model to truly develop sustainably, to truly be a social organization of the people, the people will establish the association themselves. The government is the bridge for the association to contact experts for advice on technology, production management, community development or to link with businesses to consume production, not to think for, do for or direct the activities of the association", Mr. Pham Thien Nghia shared more.
