The foundation for this technology is being laid in the latest 3GPP Release 17 standard, 5G satellite services are expected to begin deployment this year and evolve over time in an advanced 5G era.
MediaTek is now pushing to develop 5G technologies.
MediaTek is the initiator and pioneer of the 3GPP NTN standardization project, supporting the creation of an open NTN ecosystem that will benefit the largest number of users.
5G NTN includes two connectivity levels: IoT-NTN and NR-NTN. IoT-NTN is designed for short-term, low-data-rate connections such as messaging or non-real-time data. This connectivity level is suitable for messaging and location services, agriculture, forestry, transportation, logistics, and other operations in remote areas, where IoT-NTN provides an additional layer beyond the cellular network to reach areas outside the coverage of terrestrial cellular networks.
NR-NTN, meanwhile, is poised to fill remaining gaps in cellular coverage with faster data speeds, allowing users to make calls and use apps. This level of connectivity is intended to provide service in sparsely populated areas and across oceans, where the technology can provide essential services with real-time navigation and communication.
A prerequisite for any NTN is that it provides access without imposing additional hardware or operational burdens on end users. It must exist and operate seamlessly in popular mass-market devices such as smartphones, tablets and Mi-Fi devices, as well as being part of a typical mobile subscription. By sharing the same protocol stack, the modems can eventually integrate both satellite and terrestrial technologies into a complete 5G solution, capable of seamlessly switching between terrestrial and space networks in the same device.
While other companies are pursuing the pre-5G era or exclusive satellite connectivity, MediaTek has become the main leader of 5G NTN according to 3GPP standards, leading the industry with 5G NTN solutions that are first to market and will soon be available to global users.
Earlier this March, MediaTek demonstrated the industry’s first 5G NR-NTN connectivity technology live using a MediaTek 5G modem-equipped smartphone with NR-NTN connectivity at MWC 2023. The key point of this achievement is that MediaTek’s 5G NR-NTN solution meets the spectrum definition functions of the 3GPP Release 17 standard.
