Every Saturday and Sunday at 7am, "mother Hoa" is busy going to class with autistic and disabled children.
23 years of free teaching for disadvantaged children
During her 30 years as a primary school teacher, Ms. Le Thi Hoa (born in 1973, Dong Son commune, Chuong My district, Hanoi) has spent 23 years teaching disadvantaged children for free. These are children who are unfortunately autistic, disabled or seriously ill.
In 2001, Ms. Hoa transformed her small kitchen of only 10 square meters into a charity classroom. After nearly 7 years, the number of students increased, and out of pity for the children having to study in a cramped space, Ms. Hoa offered to borrow a living room of Huong Lan Pagoda (Dong Cuu village, Dong Son commune, 2km from her house) to use as a classroom.
In 2007, the class at the temple officially "opened" with 42 students. Of these, 14 were disabled students, the rest were students who did not go to school or had cognitive delays.
Managing a class with normal students is difficult, but managing a class with disabled students is a hundred times more difficult. Ms. Hoa said: "There are students who come to class with drool wetting several towels in one morning, and sometimes have muscle spasms; some even bite the teacher's hand until it bleeds."
Love and patience helped Ms. Hoa overcome the hardships of teaching her children from greetings to spelling letters. For children who were born deaf and mute, she searched for and asked for documents on signs and mouth shapes to guide them in learning.
In the class, there were two deaf and mute students, Xuan and Mien, who started studying at the age of 11. When they turned 18, Ms. Hoa asked for them to work in a textile factory. Xuan and Mien now have jobs and income. They often text "Mom Hoa" to ask about them.
"I have gone through so many hardships and these are the "sweet fruits" I receive. Every time I receive messages from my children, I am very touched" - Ms. Hoa said.
The members of the charity class are of very different ages.
Good deeds spread
Ms. Hoa's class now has nearly 90 students with ages ranging from 6 to 31 years old. Many parents have heard about her and told each other to bring their children from My Duc, Ha Dong, Dan Phuong and even the inner districts of Hanoi to "Mother Hoa's" class.
I never accept money from anyone when teaching my children. Even those who sponsor the charity class, whoever wants to help can buy clothes, food, books for the children, and if they have more money, they can buy fans, tables and chairs to help them study.

Many teachers and volunteer students who know about the class also volunteer to accompany Ms. Hoa to maintain the charity class without receiving any remuneration.
Few people know that behind her smiling, friendly face and her dedication to disadvantaged children, Ms. Hoa has experienced unimaginable hardships. In 2013, she gave birth to a child with a postpartum infection and had to be hospitalized for 20 days.
After leaving the hospital, although her wound had not yet healed, she was anxious about the class because without her, the children would be more restless, so she still carried her child to class to teach and look after her child. Later, when her children grew up, Ms. Hoa had less trouble and focused more on teaching autistic and disabled children.
Many people still call teacher Hoa "The Principal without a title". After decades of persistently teaching disabled students, dozens of them have "graduated" and are able to work to support themselves.
Nearly 10 teachers accompanying the class still vow to continue their work as long as they are healthy, without interruption even in the most difficult times. Ms. Le Thi Hoa's good deeds have quietly spread.
In 2019, she was honored by Hanoi City as "Outstanding Citizen of the Capital" for her contributions to the community.
