On December 21, billionaire Elon Musk's social network X (formerly Twitter) was down globally for more than an hour.
According to network monitoring site Downdetector, reports of problems accessing social network X increased rapidly from around 06:00 GMT (13:00, Vietnam time). At the peak of the problem, Downdetector received reports of problems logging into the platform from 67,000 X users.
The bug, which has yet to be determined, left users unable to view tweets. X's shared timelines were blank and no new posts were displayed.
However, the twitter.com website remained operational. Unable to post on X, users turned to rival social networks such as Facebook, Threads, and Reddit to get updates on X's outage. By around 1:40 p.m., X had restored service to users in many countries.
The issue also affected X Pro (formerly TweetDeck) — an app that helps manage Twitter feeds and account engagement.
Currently, X has not made any official comments about the incident or related information about the cause.
The last major outage on the platform, then still called Twitter, occurred in early July. Users experienced “speed limit exceeded” and “unable to retrieve tweet” errors. Billionaire Elon Musk later explained that these errors were intentionally triggered to prevent widespread data collection from his platform.
Social network X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, is facing many difficulties, including an investigation by the European Union (EU) into its compliance with the bloc's new law on fake news and hate speech and the withdrawal of many major advertisers from the platform.
According to internal documents, X's current market value is less than half of the $44 billion it was when billionaire Elon Musk bought the social network in October 2022.
