Social networks debate about "VAR check" tool for charity donations

A series of tools to help quickly look up donations after Typhoon Yagi

On the night of September 12, the Movement Department - Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) publicly disclosed a document consisting of more than 12,000 pages of statements of donations to people affected by storm Yagi.

Statistics as of 5:00 p.m. on September 12, the amount of money transferred by organizations and individuals to the Central Relief Mobilization Committee's account was 527.8 billion VND.

The content of the statement of the amount of support is shared by the Vietnam Fatherland Front in the form of a document file stored on Google Drive. However, due to the large amount of data, up to more than 12,000 pages, looking up the contributions of individuals and groups is difficult.

Faced with this situation, many groups specializing in information technology and programmers have quickly built tools to help users quickly look up contributions from individuals and groups.

These lookup tools are built on data shared by the Vietnam Fatherland Front, allowing users to quickly look up contributions through transfer transaction codes, contributor names or contributed amounts...

The groups behind the donation checking tools said their products will be continuously updated with donation information according to the latest data shared by the Vietnam Fatherland Front to help users search and verify donations more easily and quickly.

Netizens discovered many people "living a virtual life"

Immediately after the tools to check storm-relief donations were launched, many netizens used these tools to check the donations of famous people who shared on social networks the hundreds of millions or even billions of VND that they claimed to have transferred to the Vietnam Fatherland Front to support people affected by the storm.

However, the "half-crying, half-laughing" truth was revealed when netizens discovered that many famous people had "fake" their contributions and the actual amount they transferred to the Vietnam Fatherland Front was much lower than what they had "shown off" on social networks.

There are cases where a product is auctioned for charity purposes, but after the product is sold for 10 million VND, the owner of the product does not use the money to support as he declared, but only contributes 100,000 VND, very little compared to the amount of money earned from the auction.

There are even many cases where people were discovered receiving money from groups to contribute support, but then only contributed a very small part.

Many netizens humorously think that tools to check donation amounts are a way for netizens to "check VAR" and detect "fake living" behaviors or embezzlement of charity money...

Controversy over checking and looking up donations

Tools that help check donation amounts are well received and actively used by many users to check and detect fraudulent acts of charity money. However, these tools also cause a lot of controversy in the online community.

Many people believe that information about donors and charitable donations still lacks transparency, which can affect the reputation of groups and individuals.

"Imagine someone impersonating an individual or group and transferring a very small amount of money with the intention of affecting the reputation and honor of that individual or group, what would happen?", a Facebook user commented and received a lot of sympathy from netizens.

Some netizens believe that if any individual or group is discovered to have contributed an amount that is not consistent with what they actually supported, they can share the transfer receipt to prove their "innocence".

Although still causing a lot of controversy, the online community still highly appreciates the public and transparent move of the Vietnam Fatherland Front to publicly announce the amount of money donated, helping people to better understand the amount of money donated by the community to help people overcome the damage caused by natural disasters and stabilize their lives.

What is "VAR Check"?

VAR - Video Assistant Referee , also known as VAR technology, is an advanced technology applied to major football tournaments. This is a technology that records the progress of the match, a support tool to help referees identify errors that occur in competition situations, collisions...

When young people apply it to everyday language, the phrase "check var" is understood as checking and verifying information.
