According to the New Straits Times, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) will double the budget for national teams in 2025, to 30 million ringgit (equivalent to nearly 170 billion VND). Of which, most of this money will be spent on the Malaysian team - with the key goal being the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.

Malaysia is the opponent in the same group as Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. According to the format announced by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), only the team that tops the group will qualify for the final round. To achieve the goal of qualifying, Malaysia must be ranked above Vietnam.

The Malaysian team experienced turmoil and instability in 2024, after coach Kim Pan-gon suddenly left to return to work in Korea. Under interim coach Pau Marti, the team nicknamed "Harimau Malaya" did not perform well at the 2024 AFF Cup.

In this tournament, Malaysia did not have the strongest force because the country's top club, Johor Darul Tazim, refused to give up players to the national team. With a patchwork squad and a temporary coach, Malaysia did not pass the group stage of the AFF Cup 2024.

After 4 matches, they only won against Timor Leste with a narrow score of 3-2. The rest, coach Pau Marti's team drew with Singapore (0-0) and Cambodia (2-2), and lost to Thailand 0-1.

Immediately after being eliminated from the AFF Cup 2024, Malaysia announced a new head coach. Despite many rumors of contacting Mr. Park Hang Seo, the team finally chose Peter Cklamovski (Australian) as the head coach. In addition, the Malaysian Football Federation also promoted the plan to naturalize 7 new players.
