Autogate is an automatic immigration control system at the airport without the intervention of security personnel. This technology is being tested for 2 years in Vietnam, starting from August 2023.

Currently, Vietnam has 5 airports applying Autogate including Noi Bai (Hanoi), Da Nang, Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City) and Phu Quoc (Kien Giang). After the trial implementation phase, the Immigration Department (Ministry of Public Security) will continue to study and expand the scope of passengers allowed to use Autogate for entry and exit, and the location to register to use Autogate according to the provisions of law.

At present, there are some notes on using Autogate, especially for first-time users, according to the guidance of the Immigration Department:

- All Vietnamese citizens can use Autogate to enter and exit the country. If your passport has a chip, you can enter the country immediately without any other procedures. For other passports without a chip (including green and purple covers), you must register. No registration is required for exit.

- The registration step is done right at the gate by machine, with detailed instructions for each step. Accordingly, you will scan the personal information page of your passport onto the machine, take a photo, and have your fingerprints recognized. Note that you do not wear glasses, masks, or hats. After successfully registering on the machine, you wait for the airport staff to confirm one more time before going through the Autogate.

In case the check-in machine is not working, you can check in manually at the airport staff desk. Please note, working hours are during office hours.

This registration ensures that the personal information of entrants is synchronized with the National Population Database system.

- At Autogate, you scan the passport information page and wait for the success message. In some cases, you will be asked to scan additional boarding pass information in the second step to determine the flight number you are traveling on. The Autogate system can accurately identify the passport and the user.

Once you have completed the above steps, you have successfully entered the country. Your passport will not need to be stamped. If you want to get an entry stamp, you will have to follow the traditional steps.

Mr. Hung Pham, a tour guide specializing in European and American tours, said that his groups of guests often use Autogate to enter the country quickly. He noted that when entering the country using Autogate, it is necessary to keep the boarding pass (the barcoded part) to complete procedures at Autogate, although not all cases are necessary.

In addition, Ms. Mai Anh, a tourist from Australia who returned to Vietnam in early May using Autogate, noted that automatic entry should be done quickly, and that one should not bring bulky luggage to avoid difficult movement. "In some cases, the system may fail during testing, so you should consider using the traditional entry method," Ms. Mai Anh said.

Currently, automatic immigration does not apply to foreign citizens, except those with temporary or permanent residence cards issued by competent authorities of Vietnam. At that time, foreigners passing through automatic gates must still register in advance for immigration.
