TPO - Special classes right in the middle of the old forest on Son Tra peninsula (Da Nang) help students explore biodiversity, as well as instill a love for the environment in young people, to join hands to preserve the green lungs of the city.

Forest discovery tour, learning from nature

Son Tra Peninsula has long been a popular destination for locals and tourists because of its fresh, cool air, diverse and rich fauna, and winding roads, one side overlooking the city, the other side overlooking the endless green forests.

Joining the Son Tra experience journey, young people can immerse themselves in nature.

Over the years, the Son Tra nature experience journey has been loved by students, young people and domestic and foreign tourists, chosen to explore, experience and learn unique lessons from nature.

Having been lucky enough to explore Son Tra on foot, Do Thi Thanh Tra (grade 12 student, Vo Chi Cong High School) is always impressed and remembers this special experience forever.

Under the forest canopy, Tra and her friends learned about the diverse ecosystem of the tropical forest, watched insects nest and forage... She also learned more about large trees whose names she heard for the first time such as: cho, de, than mat...

Discover unique flora and fauna in Son Tra, especially the red-shanked douc langur

Occasionally, mischievous monkeys swooped down to tease the bewildered students. The tour was also an opportunity for Tra and her friends to see the red-shanked douc langur for the first time – an animal known as the queen of primates.

“The tour guides shared with us a lot of interesting knowledge about the typical animals and plants of Son Tra. Among them, I was most impressed with the beauty of the red-shanked douc langur. Everyone also said that the group was very lucky because not everyone participating in this journey has the opportunity to encounter and admire such a family of langurs,” Tra said.

Also coincidentally knowing about this unique Son Tra experience tour, Nguyen Thi Van Anh (20 years old, from Hanoi) and her group of friends registered and had memorable memories here.

Experts introduce the ecosystem of Son Tra Peninsula

For the first time walking a long distance, along cool paths, lying under the shade of tall trees, Van Anh was truly immersed in nature.

With supporting equipment such as magnifying glasses, binoculars, etc., the group of young people were able to admire Son Tra through a unique and more detailed lens. “For the first time, I saw termites making nests or swarms of ants carrying prey.

In addition, I also get to observe new types of plants growing and developing under the forest canopy that I normally don’t have the chance to notice. Each species of tree and animal here is associated with the history of the formation and development of Son Tra peninsula and enriches the forest ecosystem here,” Van Anh shared.

Students enjoy learning about the natural world

For young people like Thanh Tra or Van Anh, experiential tours like this help them understand and love the natural environment more and be more responsible in joining hands to protect nature and preserve the living environment.

“Preserving original, natural ecosystems like this is our responsibility and also a way for our young generation to preserve a green living environment for future generations.

These are not difficult or big tasks, but can start with changing daily habits, reducing plastic waste to reduce pressure on the Earth, living greener every day to join hands in preserving biodiversity," said Van Anh.

“Sow” love, “reap” green action

Originating from the I Love Son Tra Journey organized by the GreenViet Nature Conservation Center since 2013, which was organized free of charge for people and young people to explore the natural beauty of Son Tra as well as the red-shanked douc langur, the tours to experience and learn about the biodiversity of Son Tra peninsula have been expanded with a variety of topics, continuing to attract a large number of students and young people.

Learn about insects, reptiles... and observe the habits and characteristics of each species.

To date, the Nature Experience Education Center (under GreenViet) has organized nearly 300 trips for more than 3,500 domestic and international visitors, focusing especially on students, teachers, disadvantaged students, and young people who love nature.

In addition to the free tour program of documents, information, and artifacts about Son Tra nature displayed at the Center, tours to explore the red-shanked douc langur, learn about the world of insects for primary school students, explore nature and diverse plant species for students, and learn and play about the topic of wild animals for primary and secondary school students (with fees) are also very popular.

Each experience group is limited to less than 30 people, with the support of biodiversity experts who have been associated with Son Tra peninsula for many years throughout the tour and learning journey.

Therefore, young people are not only provided with knowledge about biodiversity but also learn more about the process of preserving and protecting rare species of animals and plants here, and protecting the endemic red-shanked douc langur that is at risk of extinction.

According to MSc. Nguyen Thi Tinh, Manager of the Nature Experience Education Center, the tours are organized regularly throughout the year, but only from October to December every year is the rainy and stormy season in Da Nang, so there will be difficulties and interruptions.

Through experiential journeys, Son Tra conservation experts hope to sow the seeds of love for nature in the hearts of visitors, especially young people, so that they will love more, be more proud and be ready to join hands to preserve the rich nature on Son Tra peninsula.

“After each journey, with interesting experiences, students and young people are very excited and want to learn more about the ecosystem in Son Tra peninsula.

Many young people also returned to become volunteers for programs such as cleaning up trash on Son Tra peninsula, reminding people not to feed monkeys... to join hands to protect the unique natural environment here. From love, green actions are sown in the community, contributing to creating a young generation that loves nature and lives responsibly towards the environment," said MSc. Tinh.
