Vietnam elected as member of UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage photo 1

The Vietnamese delegation attended the 9th Session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from July 5 to 7.

Of the 12 countries elected as alternate members for the 2022-2026 term, four are from the Asia-Pacific region, including Vietnam, Malaysia, India and Bangladesh. This is the group with the most fierce competition.

The 2003 Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, consisting of 24 members, is the key executive body of UNESCO for the protection of intangible cultural heritage, responsible for monitoring the implementation of the convention, proposing measures to protect intangible heritage, providing international support, reviewing applications for registration... for the General Assembly of the Convention to approve.

Ambassador Le Thi Hong Van, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO, emphasized: This is the second time we have assumed this role at the key cultural executive body of UNESCO. This is significant in many ways, demonstrating the country's increasing position and prestige in the international arena, demonstrating the international community's trust in our ability to contribute and our management capacity at global multilateral institutions.

This election is a recognition of Vietnam's contributions to its relations with UNESCO, in preserving, conserving and promoting the value of intangible heritage in the country and around the world. This is the result of Vietnam's foreign policy of multilateralization, diversification and comprehensive and deep international integration, as well as the result of the systematic and synchronous implementation of Vietnam's candidacy plan in recent years.

As a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for the 2022-2026 term, Vietnam will have favorable conditions to contribute more to the completion and implementation of the objectives and priorities of the 2003 Convention, enhancing the importance of intangible cultural heritage because it is not only an essential resource for cultural diversity, creativity, dialogue between cultures and social cohesion but also a driving force for sustainable development.

Along with the fact that Vietnam is currently a member of the Executive Council for the 2021-2025 term, a member of the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions for the 2021-2025 term, becoming a member of the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 Convention is also an opportunity for Vietnam to continue to contribute more proactively and positively to the major programs and orientations of UNESCO in general and on culture in particular.

This event affirms Vietnam's role and prestige at UNESCO in particular and in the international arena in general, thereby contributing to the successful implementation of the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, Resolution 22 of the Politburo on international integration and Directive 25 of the Secretariat on promoting and elevating multilateral diplomacy to 2030.
