New study finds benefits of coffee, tea for people with high blood pressure

High blood pressure can increase the risk of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease. The good news is that scientists have found a simple way to reduce this risk.

According to new research just published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports , drinking coffee and tea in moderation every day can help people with high blood pressure reduce the risk of dementia .

People with high blood pressure who drink 0.5 - 1 cup of coffee per day have the lowest risk of dementia.

To investigate the link between coffee and tea consumption and the risk of dementia in people with high blood pressure, a team of scientists from the School of Public Health, Ningxia Medical University (China), conducted a study including 453,913 participants with an average age of about 72, of whom more than 54% had high blood pressure. Participants were followed for more than 15 years.

Researchers found that people with high blood pressure had a higher rate of dementia than people without high blood pressure.

The results found that people with high blood pressure who drank 0.5 - 1 cup of coffee per day had the lowest risk of developing dementia. Readers can read more about this article on the health page on September 22.

Avocado is a 'superfood' but which diseases should you avoid eating?

Avocados are often referred to as a 'superfood' because of their nutrient-dense content. In addition to being a good source of potassium, avocados are also rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats. Although avocados are very healthy, not everyone should eat them.

People with certain health conditions should avoid eating avocados. Some nutrients in avocados can pose health risks, ranging from drug interactions to making existing conditions worse.

People with kidney disease and reflux should avoid eating avocados.

Diseases that require avoiding avocado include:

Blood clots. People with atrial fibrillation, a bleeding disorder, or who are at risk for blood clots are often prescribed blood thinners. These medications help prevent blood clots from forming, which can help prevent strokes, heart attacks, and pulmonary embolisms.

The drug works by reducing the effects of vitamin K in the body, thereby slowing the ability of blood to clot. Some blood thinners, such as Warfarin, can interact with vitamin K. Therefore, patients should limit their intake of foods containing vitamin K, including avocados.

Kidney disease. People with early-stage kidney disease do not necessarily need to control the amount of potassium in their daily meals. At this point, the kidneys can still process potassium in the blood effectively.

However, as kidney disease progresses to later stages, the kidneys' ability to filter potassium gradually decreases. As a result, potassium accumulates in the blood and leads to a dangerous condition called hyperkalemia. Because avocados are rich in potassium, people with kidney disease need to be extremely careful when eating this fruit. The next content of this article will be on the health page on September 22 .

Why people in their 50s need to drink more water

People of all ages need to drink enough water to function optimally. However, older adults may need to drink more water than when they were younger, notes Jamie Koll, a health coach in the US.

There are several reasons why older adults need to drink more water.

According to a 2023 study published in the scientific journal Nutrients , starting at age 40, the kidneys begin to lose their ability to retain water, making it difficult to maintain fluid balance in the body. And this decline accelerates after age 65.

Older adults may need to drink more water than when they were younger.

In addition to the gradual decline in kidney function mentioned above, the following are reasons why older adults are more susceptible to dehydration.

Medications. Older adults tend to take many medications that can cause dehydration, including:

Diabetes medications affect fluid retention by causing more frequent urination. These medications and laxatives can also cause diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration.

Blood pressure medications can reduce fluid intake and also have diuretic properties.

Age-related issues. A 2023 study in Nutrients added that older adults may also have difficulty moving or swallowing, making it harder to drink water. People with urinary incontinence often limit their fluid intake, and people with dementia may forget to drink enough water. Start your day with health news to see more of this article!
