The Capital Ornamental Plant Festival is taking place at the Mailand Hanoi urban area (Hoai Duc district, Hanoi) gathering thousands of large and small ornamental plants from all over the country. Among them, there are hundreds of rare and valuable ornamental plants, especially many plants that cost as much as a new apartment in Hanoi.
These "super trees" are also considered unique works of art. For example, the work "Diamond Magnolia" by Thi Vo gardener, created from a hundred-year-old diamond pine tree, is worth more than 3 billion VND. Or the work "Four generations under one roof", created from an ancient elm tree, is also worth more than 3 billion VND but the owner still does not want to sell.

With their massive appearance and "huge" price, these works attract a lot of attention. However, many people who are not bonsai enthusiasts or do not really understand will not be able to understand why these trees are so valuable.
To answer this question, Mr. Vuong Xuan Nguyen - Director of the Institute of Cultural Economics and Arts said - through the long history, bonsai enthusiasts will have criteria to evaluate a bonsai of high value, including: ancient - strange - beautiful - literary; or: ancient - strange - strange.
But the latest set of criteria at the 2024 Capital Ornamental Plant Festival that tree enthusiasts are using includes 7 more specific elements: Showing the trunk (from the root to the top is not covered or hidden); Showing the shape: (standard straight shape, slanted shape, horizontal shape, curved shape); Revealing the root (the tree must show off its surrounding rim, simulating an ancient tree); Ancient spirit (must be an ancient tree, old but must have a soul); Star (difference, more unique than other trees of the same species); Chinh dam (the artist's pruning technique is displayed on the work); Min tan (the tree after passing through the artist's hands has a thick, smooth, and evenly colored canopy).
“After understanding these 7 basic criteria, an average person can completely evaluate which is a beautiful and valuable bonsai tree ,” Mr. Nguyen affirmed.

However, these 7 criteria are not exactly the same as a set of measures to convert the monetary value of a tree, but only help people understand the basics of why a bonsai tree has a higher value than other trees.
In addition, other important factors also contribute to creating a valuable bonsai, such as: tree breed, mutation characteristics, pot and base, feng shui meaning, cultural and artistic meaning, time and effort spent taking care of the tree, certification of origin...
“Rare, unique, difficult to propagate or naturally limited plant varieties are often highly valuable. Or plants with unique color and leaf shape mutations are often sought after. Plants with special significance in the culture and history of a region are also highly valuable. Or plants originating from regions famous for ornamental plants, plants with certificates of origin, and award certificates will increase the reliability and value of the plant,” said Mr. Nguyen.
About 500 rare bonsai trees are currently gathered at the Capital Ornamental Plant Festival 2024 from November 25 to December 5; at the same time, there are about 4,500 easy-to-play bonsai trees, priced at several tens of millions of VND so that ordinary users can easily access them.
