The family of Lo Din Phu, Bo Y ethnic group in Lao Chai village, Muong Khuong town, has over 2,000 tangerine trees. In the 2024 tangerine crop, his family harvested over 30 tons of fruit, and after deducting expenses, they earned about 400 million VND. According to Mr. Phu, his family has been growing tangerines for many years; however, in recent years, thanks to following organic care techniques, the value and yield have increased significantly.
“In the past, my family only cared for the plants based on experience, without knowing the techniques of organic production; therefore, the product price was not high. Now, although the product design may not be as beautiful, the fruit is not as shiny and juicy as before, it is a clean product, so it is favored and trusted by the market. Thanks to that, when the harvest comes, traders come to the garden to buy instead of transporting them to sell like before,” said Mr. Phu.
Muong Khuong district currently has over 800 hectares of tangerines, of which over 500 hectares are in harvest, most of the area is lotus tangerines. Muong Khuong tangerines have been granted a geographical indication certificate by the Department of Intellectual Property (Ministry of Science and Technology) and are a product certified as a 3-star OCOP product. Thanks to that, the value of tangerines has been gradually increased over the years; in 2024 alone, the district's tangerine output will reach about 6,000 tons, with a value of over 140 billion VND.
Tangerine trees are just one of many crops that have been and are bringing high income in Muong Khuong district. As a purely agricultural district, the economic structure is mainly from agricultural production activities. In recent times, Muong Khuong has focused on developing agriculture in the direction of commodities; thereby, contributing to increasing the production value on the same cultivated area, improving the income of farmers.
Mr. Giang Seo Van, Secretary of Muong Khuong District Party Committee, said: In order to increase the value of agricultural production in the area, the district has closely followed Resolution 10-NQ/TU, dated August 26, 2021 of the Standing Committee of Lao Cai Provincial Party Committee on the strategy of developing commodity agriculture. Thanks to that, the development of industrialized agriculture in the district has achieved encouraging results.
Specifically, the entire Muong Khuong district currently has 5,900 hectares of tea, 1,700 hectares of pineapple, 600 hectares of specialty rice Seng cu, 200 hectares of chili...; The total area of the district's main and potential crops has reached more than 12,000 hectares, the value of key products has reached more than 1,300 billion VND, accounting for nearly 70% of the total agricultural production value of the whole district; attracting about 9,000 local workers to work directly and indirectly in the agricultural sector.
One of the decisive factors in developing agricultural commodities is to create stable output. Therefore, in recent years, Muong Khuong district has proactively invited investors to come to the locality to build factories to purchase and process agricultural products.
“Currently, there are 5 processing factories in Muong Khuong district; including 3 tea factories, 1 vegetable and fruit processing factory, and 1 facility processing products from local black pork. It is expected that in 2025, 2 more tea factories will be invested in and built in the district…, contributing to stabilizing output for farmers,” Mr. Van added.
With the close support of local authorities, specialized agencies and the consensus of farmers, agriculture in the mountainous district of Muong Khuong has been reaping “sweet fruits”. To continue promoting agricultural production towards commodities, the district will prioritize the allocation of resources from the 3 National Target Programs to support production development for households.
In particular, focus on supporting the main crops and potential crops of the district. Create all conditions with the highest spirit and the shortest time for businesses to come to Muong Khuong to invest in the field of agricultural production.
