On September 14, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thi Kim Chi and a working delegation from the Ministry of Education and Training and the Vietnam Education Trade Union visited and encouraged the education sector in Lao Cai province - a locality that suffered heavy damage from storm No. 3.
Here, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Chi visited and encouraged Pho Rang Secondary School No. 1, Bao Yen District, Bao Yen High School No. 1, and visited students in Lang Nu, Phuc Khanh Commune who were injured by floods and are being treated at Bao Yen District Hospital.
According to Director of Lao Cai Province Department of Education and Training Duong Bich Nguyet, as of September 13, 35 students in the province were dead or missing, 15 students were injured due to storms and floods. The number of staff and teachers in the entire Lao Cai education sector affected by storm No. 3 in need of support is over 600 households (houses collapsed, flooded, landslides...).
The facilities of many schools were severely damaged. In Bao Yen district alone, according to Mr. Bui Minh Tuan, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Bao Yen district, 25 students in the district died due to floods, of which 23 were in Lang Nu, Phuc Khanh commune. 410 teachers' families suffered losses due to floods.
Currently, the functional forces of Lao Cai province, Bao Yen district and volunteer students are actively working with schools to clean up and overcome the consequences of storm No. 3 to soon stabilize learning. However, due to the heavy impact on students and teachers, difficulties in schools, and traffic separation between areas, it is expected that only 30 schools in Bao Yen district will allow students to return to school from the beginning of next week (September 16), the remaining 43 schools are expected to organize learning for students from September 23. The Department of Education and Training of Bao Yen district is trying to do a good job of stabilizing the psychology of teachers and parents.
Deeply sympathizing with the enormous loss and damage that cannot be overcome in a day or two for the education sector, teachers and students of Lao Cai province, Deputy Minister Nguyen Kim Chi said that first of all, the education sector of Lao Cai province needs to pay attention to stabilizing the spirit and ideology, encouraging the spirit of students, teachers and parents. At the same time, urgently coordinate with local authorities to mobilize functional forces and volunteer forces to clean up schools after the flood.
In preparing to re-establish teaching and learning, the Deputy Minister emphasized that “the first important thing is safety”. We will try our best to return to teaching and learning as soon as possible, but we will not try if teachers and students do not ensure adequate safety conditions. Students will not be allowed to go to school in unsafe places, because even though the storm and flood have passed, there is still a risk of thunderstorms and landslides.
Regarding the Lao Cai education sector, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Chi requested a comprehensive report on the damage caused by storm No. 3; consider adjusting teaching plans accordingly, plan tutoring and make-up classes for students, and ensure the school year program plan.
