Impressive destination
One day in mid-September, we had the opportunity to visit Tra Que vegetable village in Tra Que hamlet, Cam Ha commune, about 3km from the center of Hoi An city. We were extremely excited to see many foreign tourists experiencing farming here. The garden owner, Mr. Nguyen Len (59 years old), was guiding tourists to carry watering cans for the newly planted mustard greens. Both visitors and garden owners were happy and excited to experience being farmers in the vegetable village.
“In the past two years, the number of visitors to the vegetable garden to experience the garden has increased, most of them are from Western countries. They bring their families, including children, to join the experience. They plant vegetables on the prepared soil, then adults carry buckets to water them. The whole family takes pictures of the farming. They seem to enjoy these experiences very much,” said Mr. Len.
According to our records, in the middle of the vegetable fields in Tra Que village, clean concrete roads are invested, vehicles can go straight to the green vegetable fields with all kinds of herbs, mustard greens, perilla, basil, celery... In recent years, Tra Que vegetable village has welcomed more visitors, thanks to which people's income has increased in the direction of tourism combined with agriculture.
Visitors to Tra Que vegetable village will experience cycling through green vegetable roads, experience being a farmer with real vegetable growers, and prepare dishes from green vegetables themselves; as well as some specialties of Quang Nam such as Quang noodles, Cao Lau... with a ticket price of only 35,000 VND per person. The most ideal time to experience is usually early morning or afternoon to avoid the harsh sunlight at noon, and to be immersed in the poetic beauty of the smooth vegetable fields.
According to local people, Tra Que vegetable village has a history of more than 300 years, with many types of vegetables grown on an area of about 40 hectares. In recent years, Tra Que has become an indispensable destination for tourists when coming to Hoi An. In particular, the vegetable growing process of local people is environmentally friendly, absolutely not using chemicals or pesticides to ensure the health of consumers.
With the efforts of the local people and authorities, by April 2022, Tra Que Vegetable Village was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a national intangible cultural heritage in the category of "Folk knowledge, traditional crafts". This is one of the prides of the people, at the same time, opening up opportunities for tourism development associated with traditional craft villages.
In early December 2024, at the International Conference on Rural Tourism held in Hoi An, with the participation of hundreds of delegates from more than 50 countries and territories, Tra Que Vegetable Village was the only representative of Vietnam to be honored with the title of “Best Tourist Village” by the United Nations Tourism Organization. This event opened up a new opportunity for the people of Tra Que in particular, and Hoi An in terms of the highlight in tourism development associated with rural agriculture.
Brand Affirmation
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of a recent conference, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam, said: The recognition of Tra Que Vegetable Village as the Best Tourist Village demonstrates the recognition of the efforts of the local people in preserving indigenous cultural values; traditional crafts; as well as the long-standing lifestyle of the local people. The award is a recognition of the creativity and focus on developing sustainable, community-based tourism; demonstrating the kindness and hospitality of the local people.
Along with that, the recognition of Tra Que Vegetable Village as the World's Best Tourist Village will contribute to honoring the value, spreading the brand and promoting Hoi An, Quang Nam tourism to international tourists. In recent times, the Hoi An city government has had many guidelines and orientations to develop tourism in the city, including Tra Que Vegetable Village. This helps Hoi An tourism become more and more diverse, visitors have many experiences from the Japanese Covered Bridge, Thanh Ha Pottery Village, boating on the Hoai River, Tra Que Vegetable Village...
According to Mr. Hong, in order to promote the brand of Tra Que Vegetable Village tourist destination, as well as build the best tourist space to serve tourists, Hoi An City People's Committee has just approved the Outline of the task of building a tour route in Cu Lao Cham - Tra Que Vegetable Village - Thanh Ha Pottery Village.
Accordingly, Hoi An aims for 100% of homestay and villa businesses in Tra Que vegetable village to be recognized as meeting green tourism standards according to the Quang Nam Green Tourism Criteria; 50% of restaurant businesses and cooking classes to practice green tourism.
The locality will support and guide people and businesses to practice green tourism at homestay, villa, restaurant and cooking school establishments, and promote the green tour route to Tra Que vegetable village.
“The implementation of the green tour route in Tra Que vegetable village aims to exploit tourism products that harmoniously combine the values of natural resources and social culture; at the same time, promote the green tourism model in the province to develop more and more. With the efforts of the people and the government, it is expected that in the coming time, Tra Que vegetable village will welcome more and more visitors,” said Mr. Hong.
