Việt NamViệt Nam19/12/2024

After three days off school due to illness, Siu Ksor Ngoc Tam (5 years old, Buon De school – Hoa Hong kindergarten, Cheo Reo ward, Ayun Pa town, Gia Lai province) seemed to walk to school faster and more eagerly. When asked, Siu Ksor Ngoc Tam honestly confessed that she likes going to school because she gets to eat delicious breakfast.

At nearly 7am, in the classrooms at Buon De school, 32 children, including Siu Ksor Ngoc Tam, quickly sat down, in front of them were hot bowls of porridge prepared by the ward teachers. Their big, black eyes occasionally looked up at the teachers, clearly showing their anticipation. “The breakfast is delicious. I really like the breakfast that you brought. I will try to go to school and study harder,” Siu Ksor Ngoc Tam eagerly said.

For nearly a year now, poor students at the two schools in Buon De and Buon Banh of Hoa Hong Kindergarten have been supported with free breakfasts twice a month. The program "Breakfast of Love" is implemented by the Executive Committee of the Cheo Reo Ward Youth Union (Ayun Pa Town, Gia Lai Province). The program is aimed at providing nutritious breakfasts for poor students. Meals can be hot, fragrant pots of porridge or soup, noodles, steamed buns and a box of fresh milk delivered directly to the students.

The program "Breakfast of Love" was implemented by the Executive Committee of the Cheo Reo Ward Youth Union (Ayun Pa town, Gia Lai province).

Sharing about this meaningful activity, Ms. Dang Thi Thanh Thuy - Secretary of the Cheo Reo Ward Youth Union - said: In early 2024, after surveying the situation, it was found that most of the students at the two schools in Banh and De villages were in difficult circumstances. Many children often skip breakfast when going to school, some only eat cold rice, some children do not have breakfast, are hungry so they skip school and follow their parents to the fields.

Understanding these circumstances, with the desire to help students have more motivation to go to class, love school, love class and attend school more diligently, the Executive Committee of Cheo Reo Ward Youth Union has developed a plan to implement the program "Loving Breakfast" for students at these two schools.

“Initially, the budget for implementing the program was contributed by the ward’s youth union members. After posting the activity on social networks, the program received support from local agencies, units, and philanthropists. Thanks to that, from once a month, the ward’s Youth Union increased the “Love Breakfast” to twice a month. Before implementing the free breakfasts, the ward’s Youth Union Executive Committee contacted the homeroom teachers to inform parents and students. In addition to the breakfast, each student received an additional box of milk to improve their physical health,” Ms. Thuy informed.

Just like that, regularly twice a month, at exactly 6am, the ward's union members and youths divide into 2 groups and present themselves at the two schools in Buôn Đôn and Buôn Bảnh to divide the food and distribute it to the students. For each breakfast, the ward's union prepares 70 meals, each worth 10,000 - 12,000 VND. In addition to the students, the ward's union also distributes it to the children brought along by their parents. The students are still young, so the union members and youths together with the teacher help them eat and clean up so that the teacher and students can quickly get to class on time.

Ms. Rah Lan H'Dim - the teacher in charge of the Banh school confided: Having been with the students for more than 3 years, I understand the hardships of the students here. Due to difficult circumstances, their education has not received much attention from their parents. I myself often have to go to their homes to take them to class. Therefore, when the "Loving Breakfast" program was implemented, the teachers and I were extremely happy. Since the program was launched, the students have been able to go to school more regularly because their stomachs are full.

Sharing about her upcoming plans, Ms. Dang Thi Thanh Thuy wishes: “We hope that the program will not only provide nutritious breakfasts for poor students, helping them go to school, but also promote the movement of mutual love and affection, spreading love to union members and young people. Hopefully, in the near future, the program will continue to receive more support from benefactors so that we can replicate the model and support more breakfasts for students in difficult circumstances.”

Ms. Cao Thi Thuyen – Vice Principal of Hoa Hong Kindergarten – informed: The whole school currently has 6 classes with 184 students; of which Buon De school alone has 32 students, Buon Banh school has 36 students with 100% of them being ethnic minority students. The students at these two schools all come from difficult family circumstances.

“Thanks to the “Breakfast of Love” program, mobilizing students at these two schools has been easier. Every time the program is implemented, the school's Board of Directors assigns teachers and staff in the school's youth union to coordinate and support. It is the care and love of everyone that has given the children more motivation to go to school. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's attendance rate reached 98%; the student retention rate reached 100%, this is an extremely positive signal" - Ms. Thuyen shared.
