The hospital has just successfully performed a left hip replacement for Mr. NVD. Mr. D has had pain in his left hip for many years and has received medical treatment at other medical facilities but it has not improved. The pain has increased, making it difficult for him to walk, seriously affecting his quality of life. Mr. D has a habit of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day and regularly abuses alcohol 3-4 times a week.

Mr. D went to Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital for examination. After carefully examining the patient's condition and paraclinical results, the doctor diagnosed the patient with left femoral head necrosis. The patient was admitted to the hospital for total left hip replacement surgery. After the successful surgery, the patient was cared for and prescribed physical therapy, and the recovery process was good. On the 5th day after surgery, Mr. D was able to walk again. The patient has now been discharged from the hospital and is being followed up for outpatient check-ups as directed by the doctor.

MSc. Dr. Le Dung, Head of the Department of Musculoskeletal, Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital said: The cause of femoral head necrosis can be due to trauma or the habit of smoking too much, abusing alcohol, using corticosteroids for a long time to treat joint diseases... As in D's case, smoking and abusing alcohol lead to chronic inflammation and blockage of capillaries that nourish the femoral head, leading to ischemia and gradual necrosis of the cartilage cells in the head.

In the early stages, femoral head necrosis can be treated with methods such as physical therapy, pain relievers when the pain is severe, and limiting heavy labor or excessive sports activities. When the femoral head is completely damaged, the last resort is hip replacement, helping the patient to walk easily and painlessly.

Femoral head necrosis can be treated if detected early and diagnosed correctly. When there are signs of pain in the hip joint on one or both sides, especially when squatting, adducting the hip joint, rotating the hip joint internally or externally, pain when walking a lot or standing for a long time and reduced when resting or having persistent knee pain..., patients should go to a hospital with a musculoskeletal or orthopedic department for early diagnosis and treatment.

To prevent femoral head necrosis, each individual should establish a healthy lifestyle, have a scientific lifestyle, exercise properly, and avoid risk factors such as alcohol, tobacco, and corticosteroids.
