Social workers working with people with disabilities must act as if they are helping family members in order to bond and do well - Photo: QL
This reality raises many issues, including the role of social workers. This was also a concern at the discussion "Social work - joining hands to fill in the gaps" recently organized by the Youth Social Work Center (Vietnam Youth Union).
Mr. VO VAN ANH (Ho Chi Minh City Association of Disabled Youth)
Ms. Doan Thi Bich Hop - Deputy Director of the Center for Vocational Education for the Disabled and Orphans in Ho Chi Minh City - said the first difficulty is recruiting students because disabled students are slower and are often recruited through referrals from friends.
Mobilizing people to provide daily meals is also difficult, and the most difficult part is introducing jobs and selling products made by you.
As a disabled person, Mr. Vo Van Anh - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Disabled Youth Association - said that disabled people always strive to improve themselves and do not want to rely on subsidies, but their health makes it difficult to be suitable for certain occupations, and some places do not provide suitable vocational guidance.
Therefore, he hopes that when teaching vocational skills to people with disabilities, vocational training should be appropriate to the current context, not just teaching what is available.
How to have social workers who are passionate about their profession is also a question.
Dr. Do Thi Nga - Deputy Head of the Faculty of Social Work, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - expressed that one must be truly passionate and have a love for people to pursue this career.
"You need to have inner intelligence, which is the ability to understand yourself, understand and sympathize with others, be patient, tolerant, and keep information confidential with the people you approach," Ms. Nga shared.
Dr. Nga said that young people can do this very easily, when they have the ability to effectively call for resources on social networks. What is needed is to practice inner training, listen more, have perseverance and understanding.
Mr. Vo Van Anh said that doing social work with people with disabilities requires observation because sometimes two people with the same disabilities have different mentalities and need different methods of application. "Do your job as if you were helping a family member," Mr. Anh said.
