In the first 3 months of 2025, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover is estimated at more than 1.1 billion USD (down more than 13% compared to the same period in 2024).
Experts say the reason for this decline is because the export output of durian (a key product, contributing nearly half of the total export turnover of the industry) has decreased sharply as import markets, especially China (Vietnam's largest durian export market), have tightened quarantine and food safety regulations.
Accordingly, since the beginning of 2025, China has required all durian products imported into the country to have results of analysis of Cadmium residue (a toxic heavy metal) and O-yellow (an industrial dye). Both of these substances are strictly controlled due to the risk of causing cancer. Not only Vietnam, but other durian exporting countries are also affected, causing the customs clearance process to be prolonged and complicated, increasing the risk of damage to goods, so many businesses have proactively suspended exports to this market.
Vinafruit representative said that if this situation continues, fruit and vegetable exports in 2025 will decrease compared to 2024. In 2024, durian exports will reach 3.4 billion USD, accounting for nearly 50% of the total export turnover of the country's fruit and vegetable industry (more than 7.15 billion USD).
