Five Vietnamese track and field athletes were found to be using doping at the 31st SEA Games. Of these, because their penalties will not be completed until mid-November 2023, Quach Thi Lan and Khuat Phuong Anh are not allowed to compete in the 2023 National Track and Field Championship. The remaining three athletes, Vu Thi Ngoc Ha, Hoang Thi Ngoc, and Le Ngoc Phuc, have completed their penalties since October 15 and are allowed to compete. However, Ngoc Ha has retired from her athletic career, Hoang Thi Ngoc has switched to coaching, so only Le Ngoc Phuc is registered to compete. Ngoc appeared at the tournament as the coach of the Quang Binh team.
Nguyen Thi Oanh will hardly have a worthy opponent in the national championship.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, in charge of the athletics department of the Department of Sports and Physical Training and General Secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation, said that the Vietnam Doping and Sports Medicine Center (the center) will take doping test samples at the 2023 National Athletics Championship. The method and number of samples will be decided by the center but will usually be random and focus on high-achieving athletes.
The 2023 National Athletics Championship will feature a total of 50 events, including 24 men's events, 24 women's events and 2 mixed events. The tournament attracts nearly 500 athletes from 53 units nationwide. Among them, Vietnam's top track and field stars such as Nguyen Thi Oanh (Bac Giang), Nguyen Thi Huyen (Nam Dinh), Tran Thi Nhi Yen (Long An), Luong Duc Phuoc (Dong Nai) ... all participate. The tournament also hopes to find more talent for the Vietnam track and field team to prepare for international competitions. As for Le Ngoc Phuc, he is still expected to win a gold medal in the men's 400m event. In the past, Phuc has been training regularly so his form is relatively good.
