Although he started training professionally and competing at a high level quite late, the progress of Vietnamese national track and field athlete Luong Duc Phuoc (born in 2002) has been remarkable. He competed impressively in national track and field championships, shone at the 2022 National Sports Festival, then made a spectacular breakthrough to win the Gold Medal (HCV) at the 31st SEA Games, the Silver Medal (HCB) at the 32nd SEA Games... Luong Duc Phuoc is currently considered the "golden boy" of the national track and field team and is striving for greater goals on the path to conquering sporting glory.

From "rough diamond"...
Duc Phuoc was born and raised in Dong Nai province, with his maternal hometown in Trieu Hoa commune, Trieu Phong district. Talking about his chance to join athletics, he said that although he loved sports since he was young, he never thought that he would become a professional athlete. “When I was in 10th grade, my teacher set up an athletics team at school. At that time, because I really liked running, I proactively asked to join. After waiting for a long time, the teacher agreed to let me join the team to practice. Because the team only practiced twice a week, I spent most of my free time practicing running on my own, then participated in school competitions and won a provincial gold medal. By 11th grade, I was officially allowed to join the Dong Nai province athletics team,” Duc Phuoc recounted.
At first, when he joined the Dong Nai province athletics team, because he had not yet adapted to the environment, and the distance to the training ground was 60 km from home, Duc Phuoc had to make a lot of effort. He said that because of the long distance, the coach only allowed him to visit home once every 2 or 3 weeks. Many times, the 17-year-old boy felt pressured, missed home and wanted to go home. However, thanks to the care and support from his family and coaches, he gradually caught up and stabilized his spirit to focus on training for many big goals. Coming to professional athletics like a "rough diamond", Duc Phuoc had to hone and practice a lot in terms of physical strength as well as techniques and tactics to confidently enter professional competition.
Duc Phuoc's training efforts were duly rewarded at the 2018 National Sports Festival when he reached the semi-finals of the men's 800m race. Playing for the Dong Nai province athletics team, he won two gold medals in the 800m and 1,500m races at the 2019 National Youth Athletics Championship.
An important milestone in Duc Phuoc's career was at the 2019 Singapore Open Athletics Championship, where he competed excellently, defeating many opponents in the continent and Southeast Asia to win the gold medal in the 1,500 m distance.
Previously, he also brought home a bronze medal for Vietnamese athletics in the 800m distance. Continuing his achievements, at the 2020 National Athletics Championship, the young man from Quang Tri won 2 silver medals in the 800m and 1,500m distances; 1 bronze medal in the 800m distance at the 2021 National Athletics Championship.

In 2022, Duc Phuoc was called up to the Vietnam national athletics team with high expectations from the coaches. Specializing in the middle-distance running events of 800m and 1,500m, Phuoc has made the most of every opportunity, always making spectacular breakthroughs during the competition to achieve high results.
Proof of that is that he has excellently brought home the gold medal at the 31st SEA Games in the Vietnam national athletics team. This is also the motivation and new opportunity for this young athlete to conquer more peaks in his career...

From 2022, athletics fans across the country will know more about the name Luong Duc Phuoc because he made a strong impression at My Dinh National Stadium when he won the 1,500m distance, winning the 31st SEA Games gold medal.
On the track, although not rated higher than athlete Tran Van Dang, after a fierce chase, Duc Phuoc excelled to finish first, winning the gold medal. It can be said that he truly "shined" when he officially became a national track and field athlete.
“SEA Games 31 is a major regional tournament that I participated in for the first time as part of the national athletics team. Therefore, the gold medal I won is very meaningful, giving me more motivation and confidence to conquer the next tournaments. This impressive achievement is a stepping stone for me to continue to train hard, aiming for higher goals in the Asian and international sports arena,” Duc Phuoc shared.
Thanks to always knowing how to learn and absorb the good things of the senior athletes, knowing how to progress and constantly improve himself, this young athlete has gradually asserted himself, conquering the glory of sports in many tournaments nationwide.
In addition to the 31st SEA Games, Duc Phuoc also competed successfully at the 2022 National Sports Festival when he won 2 gold medals in the 800m and 1,500m distances. At the 2023 and 2024 National Athletics Championships, Duc Phuoc also maintained his form with numerous "golden achievements" in the 800m, 1,500m and 4x800m relay races. In May 2023, the "golden boy" of Vietnamese athletics continued to conquer the 32nd SEA Games with the highest determination. As a result, he won 2 silver medals in the 800m and 1,500m distances.
Recently, Duc Phuoc has participated in a number of marathons and affirmed his "class" by stepping onto the highest podium many times. Notably, in June 2024, Duc Phuoc won first prize in the men's 10 km distance at the Quang Tri Marathon 2024 - Journey to the Land of Fire.
Although he is a national athlete and rarely has time to return to his hometown, many people who have met Duc Phuoc commented that he is very sociable and has good relationships with many runners and running enthusiasts in Quang Tri province.
He said that being able to be present and compete with many fellow countrymen at the Quang Tri Marathon 2024 - Journey to the Land of Fire is a beautiful memory. This is also one of the most meaningful races he has ever participated in. “I am currently training hard, aiming to break the record for the 1,500m race, while striving to achieve many high achievements in regional and international sports arenas and orienting my path to becoming a coach in the future.
In particular, I will return to Quang Tri to participate in the 66th Tien Phong Newspaper National Marathon and Long Distance Championship scheduled to be held in 2025. This time, I will spend time visiting historical sites and learning more about my homeland, meeting runners and friends who share the same passion for running," Duc Phuoc said.
