Construction of 1,000 billion VND pedestrian bridge across Saigon River to Thu Thiem peninsula begins

On the morning of March 29, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee held a groundbreaking ceremony for the pedestrian bridge project across the Saigon River, connecting Bach Dang Park (District 1) with the riverside park of Thu Thiem urban area (Thu Duc City). This is a project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).

Will be completed in 1 year

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tran Quang Lam - Director of the Department of Transport and Public Works of Ho Chi Minh City said that the new urban area of ​​Thu Thiem (Thu Duc City) is oriented to become a new, modern and international center of Ho Chi Minh City. With a strategic and prime location on the East side of the Saigon River, opposite the existing center of Ho Chi Minh City, this place is planned systematically and synchronously and is expected to become an international financial, commercial and service center, supplementing and increasing the function of the historical center of Ho Chi Minh City.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has completed the investment in the construction of Thu Thiem Bridge, Ba Son Bridge, and Saigon River Tunnel to connect Thu Thiem with the existing city center across the Saigon River. Up to now, the City continues to invest in the pedestrian bridge project across the Saigon River to gradually complete infrastructure connections and speed up the completion of the new Thu Thiem urban area.

"The City People's Committee organized an international architectural competition with the support of Dai Quang Minh Real Estate Investment Joint Stock Company (under Thaco Truong Hai Group) and the selected result was the architectural solution of a steel dome structure in the shape of a water coconut leaf - a familiar symbol of the Southern Delta region, whose author is the Joint Venture Chodai-Takashi Niwa Japan and Chodai Kisojiban Vietnam. This is not only a traffic project but also a new architectural symbol of the city, a place for people and tourists to admire the beauty of the city, the Saigon River, participate in cultural and artistic events, and will also become a place to connect society and promote tourism" - Mr. Lam informed.

Also according to the representative of the Ho Chi Minh City transport sector, after the architectural plan was selected, the project received great attention from the people and the city's business community. Nutifood Nutrition Food Joint Stock Company proposed to sponsor nearly 1,000 billion VND to build the project to show gratitude to the people of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the people of the whole country in general, while contributing to the city's development goals.

The Department of Transport and Public Works of Ho Chi Minh City, related departments, Nutifood Company and consulting units have completed the investment preparation steps according to regulations. Up to now, the project has met the conditions to start construction, 1 month ahead of schedule.

"The pedestrian bridge project across the Saigon River will be completed with the highest quality and aesthetics and strives to be inaugurated on the occasion of April 30, 2026," said Mr. Lam.

The bridge will be a testament to the development of Ho Chi Minh City as one of the largest cities in the country, constantly modernizing and integrating but still maintaining its sustainable cultural values.

Therefore, we are committed to working with the highest sense of responsibility, not only stopping at achieving progress but also aiming to create a beautiful, effective and long-term meaningful project for the community" - Mr. Cuong said and requested the Department of Transport, relevant departments, agencies and local authorities to closely coordinate with sponsors, contractors, and construction units to ensure the construction of the project is on schedule, meeting the requirements of quality, safety, aesthetics and environment.

According to the approved investment scale, the pedestrian bridge project across the Saigon River has a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND, the bridge location on the District 1 side at the Ben Bach Dang Park area (about 125m south of Me Linh construction site) and on the Thu Duc City side at the riverside park area of ​​the new urban area of ​​Thu Thiem. The total length of the bridge is about 720m, width 6 - 11m, clearance 80 x 10m.

The bridge applies the space steel arch structural solution for the first time in Vietnam.
