Design

The inspiration behind the design of the FreeBuds 5 comes from the glass fabrication process , with tempered glass beads at the top of the earphones providing exceptionally high hardness, able to withstand strong impacts. FreeBuds 5 has a unique design

By simulating data from hundreds of ear shapes during the design process , Huawei has fine-tuned the FreeBuds 5 to ensure a snug fit. Users are provided with two different sizes of silicone tips in the box that are optimized for the ear, allowing the buds to be placed outside the ear canal without having to press into the ear like most other wireless headphones.  

The case has a pebble-shaped design that provides a secure, click-closing mechanism. The bottom of the case houses the USB-C port. Each earbud weighs about 5.4 grams, while the case weighs 45 grams.

Features

The FreeBuds 5 feature dual 11mm dynamic magnetic drivers with a claimed frequency response range of 16Hz to 40kHz . The buds connect via Bluetooth 5.2 and support dual connectivity with two devices, as well as earbud removal sensors to automatically pause and resume media playback.

The earbuds support the high-bitrate LDAC codec as well as Huawei's L2HC 2.0 codec , and are promised to be 30% more sensitive than the FreeBuds 4. The buds offer an adaptive sound equalizer that can be tweaked in the Huawei AI Life app. The companion app also allows users to toggle all sorts of features on the headphones as well as Find My Headphones which plays a loud chime on the headphones if the user misplaces them.

Another cool feature is the built-in infrared sensors next to the drivers that scan the ear and adjust the sound output based on the fit.

The touch controls are programmable with single-tap and double-tap controls , as well as swipes up and down for volume control. The charging case supports both wired and wireless charging. Meanwhile, the buds are IP54 dust and splash resistant, while the case is not.

Performance and sound quality

The FreeBuds 5 offers good sound quality , especially the excellent bass performance. It has been tuned by Huawei itself to provide a better overall experience for different music genres. The default EQ profile is a bit flat, but the bass boost mode offers the best experience among the presets. Users can customize the sound profile to their liking in the Huawei AI Life app and save up to three presets.

Initial experience shows that FreeBuds 5 offers quite good touch control accuracy , while also being equipped with a convenient volume control button when not using the phone. The ANC feature only works to separate sound at a moderate level.

Performance metrics and sound quality are good

Connection strength was stable for the most part, even when switching between devices, with a range of up to 10 meters. Dual pairing worked well, although it sometimes took a few seconds to switch between phone and laptop. There was a noticeable lag when watching videos on the laptop, but that’s common among wireless headphones, and they worked better when connected to a phone. The FreeBuds 5 perform well on indoor calls.

Battery life

Testing with the FreeBuds 5 shows that the 42 mAh battery on the headset can operate for 4.5 hours with ANC off and more than 3 hours with ANC on. Users can charge the battery up to 5 times via the charging case, which has a built-in 505 mAh battery. Fully charging the buds and case takes about 40 minutes via cable and more than 4 hours via wireless charger.
