Opening of "Journalists' Book Week" in Ho Chi Minh City

This morning (June 17), the opening ceremony of the “Book Week for Journalists” was solemnly held at Ho Chi Minh City Book Street. Attending the opening ceremony were representatives of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee including Mr. Duong Anh Duc - Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and Mr. Lam Dinh Thang - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, there were Journalist Tran Trong Dung - Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association; Journalist Le Hoang - Vice President of the Vietnam Publishing Association; Journalist Ly Viet Trung - Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Journalists Association, Editor-in-Chief of the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Newspaper; Journalist Nguyen Ngoc Toan - Member of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Editor-in-Chief of Thanh Nien Newspaper.

The organizers cut the ribbon to open the "Book Week for Journalists" activity.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the "Journalists' Book Week", journalist Tran Trong Dung - Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association affirmed: "This is an opportunity for press agencies to introduce books compiled from articles published in print newspapers, electronic newspapers, works created from their newspaper's competitions and will continue to actively introduce them to readers in the coming time through exchange programs, book introductions of a number of press agencies... The works not only have value in content but also have archival value over time".

Also according to journalist Tran Trong Dung, in the first year of organization, the Organizing Committee expects to create practical activities to promote the emulation movement to build a cultural environment in press agencies. From there, promote the reading movement among journalists, encourage journalists to participate in writing books, convey to readers pages of books filled with the breath of life, closely linked to the flow of social news. With the strength of writing during their time working at press agencies, journalists will create works that are full of the spirit of the times.

Journalist Tran Trong Dung - Vice President of Vietnam Journalists Association spoke at the opening ceremony.

This is an activity organized in response to the Ministry of Information and Communications' launch of Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day. Thereby honoring books and encouraging and developing the reading movement among journalists in Ho Chi Minh City. At the same time, promoting the emulation movement "Building a cultural environment in press agencies and the culture of Vietnamese journalists".

At the “Journalists’ Book Week”, good, attractive works, full of the breath of life and closely related to current events from journalists themselves were introduced to readers. After nearly 1 month, the Organizing Committee received 281 book titles (291 books), currently on display at the Ho Chi Minh City Book Street. Of which, there are 55 works from 7 press agencies; 226 works (236 books) from 105 reporters, 15 groups of authors who have worked and are working at newspapers across the country.

At the end of the “Journalists’ Book Week”, the Organizing Committee will present these books to the Vietnam Press Museum (Hanoi) and the Faculty of Journalism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City to serve the reading and research needs of readers, lecturers and students.

To encourage the creative activities of journalists, the Organizing Committee awarded commemorative medals to journalists whose books won high awards, including: Journalist Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hai: B Prize for Prose from the Vietnam Writers' Association in 1977, A Prize from the Ministry of Public Security and the Vietnam Writers' Association in 2005, Highest Prize for Prose - Huynh Van Nghe Literature and Arts Award in 2015; Journalist Duong Thanh Truyen with the work Uncle Ho's Will - a unique Vietnamese language textbook (B Prize for the Award on the topic of Studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style, period 2018-2020).

Commemorative medals were also awarded to journalist Khuynh Diep: Second Prize in the Reportage - Journalism Contest 2015 - 2016; Journalist Nguyen Hong Lam: The work The Crumbly Love Song (Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association Award 2022); Journalist Le Minh Quoc: Hello World, Now I Have Come (C Prize - National Book Award 2020); Journalist Lai Van Long: Fire Records was recognized by the Vietnam Record Organization as the record for the most crime novels in Vietnam in 30 years (1992 - 2022); The 4th For National Security and Peaceful Life Award (2017 - 2020); Journalist Bui Phan Thao: The work Smoke to the Sky Award of Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association 2022, Mai Vang Award of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper in 2022 for Culture - Arts; Journalist Bui Tieu Quyen: Hot Coffee Travels to Truong Sa (Children's Literature Award - Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association 2022), Mai Vang Award of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper 2022, C Prize - National Book Award 2022.
