Vietnamese tourists look forward to going to Northeast Asia to see the red leaves of autumn

Le Thanh Hien, 28, a communications worker in Ho Chi Minh City, said he had waited four years to go to Korea during the leaf-changing season.

At the end of August, Hien and her group of friends waited for the travel company's promotion to book a 5-day, 4-night package tour for 17.5 million VND, with the itinerary mainly in Seoul. People who wait until autumn to go to Northeast Asia such as Korea and Japan to see the red leaves like Hien's group are not alone.

At the Ho Chi Minh City International Travel Expo (ITE) 2023 taking place from September 7 to 9, representatives of several units said that tour programs in Northeast Asian countries received the attention of many tourists. The number of foreign tourists this fall is slightly higher than in 2022.

Ms. Tran Phuong Linh, Marketing Director - Information Technology of BenThanh Tourist, commented that most Northeast Asian markets have just reopened tourism since late 2022 or early 2023, so this is the first time Vietnamese tourists have the opportunity to enjoy the autumn of yellow and red leaves after the pandemic.

Ms. Linh added that although the number of visitors to the ITE 2023 fair increased slightly compared to last year, purchasing power increased beyond expectations. This year's visitors mainly bought family tours, with large-value tours such as Korea (from 16 million VND to 25 million VND) or Japan (from 38 million VND). Therefore, the company's revenue increased 4 times compared to the 2022 fair.

Ms. Tran Thi Bao Thu, Marketing and Communications Director of Vietluxtour, said that the markets of Korea, Japan and Taiwan are the destinations of Vietnamese individual tourists in the fall, from September to November. In early September, the company recorded a 10-15% increase in the number of tour bookings in Northeast Asia compared to the same period in 2019. The number of customers contacting to search for information on Northeast Asia travel programs in the fall was the highest, followed by Europe. Some travel companies have offered attractive incentives to attract more customers and it is expected that in the next two months, the number of bookings to Korea, Japan and Taiwan will increase.

However, Ms. Bao Thu commented that the Northeast Asian market this fall cannot recover the number of visitors to the level of 2019 due to the impact of the economic recession.

Besides Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia is still a familiar market for Vietnamese tourists. According to some travel agencies, customers who register for Southeast Asia tours departing in September and October are mainly groups who have not arranged their travel time during the summer or the September 2nd holiday. Thailand and Singapore are still two popular destinations for group tourists.
