Despite a tough 120 minutes against Slovakia, England still won the final to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. After the match, midfielder Jude Bellingham and coach Gareth Southgate responded to previous criticism aimed at the "Three Lions".
Coach Gareth Southgate, who has been under the most pressure recently, has spoken out about the criticism aimed at him.
“With 15 minutes left, I wondered if Bellingham would stay. But he and Kane created explosive moments. That’s why I didn’t change the team even though many people asked me to do so. The team still had enough players to attack on the pitch,” said Southgate.
Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham - the best player of the match, also had the first time to respond harshly to criticism aimed at the England team before the knockout stage of Euro 2024.
“It’s a different feeling. In international football, in the knockout stages, it’s even worse. You’re 30 seconds away from going home and you’re being told rubbish. It feels like we’ve let a whole nation down,” England’s No. 10 said in his post-match press conference.
When asked what he meant by “trash,” Bellingham simply laughed: “You know what I mean when I say trash…”.
The victory over Slovakia was not really convincing, but by reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, England has been able to temporarily "cool down" public opinion. Coach Gareth Southgate and his team will continue their journey to compete for the championship with the match against Switzerland on July 6.
