The new iPad Pro and Surface Pro prove OLED is the display of the future

For years, companies have tried to promote the above display technologies as performing as well as OLED, but the latest products from Apple and Microsoft have proven that OLED is truly the pinnacle of display technology.

Last week, Apple held a Let's Loose event to announce the new iPad Pro and iPad Air. While the iPad Pro received a number of upgrades, including an M4 chip and being the thinnest product Apple has ever created, the highlight of the product was the Ultra Retina XDR - the first OLED display technology for an iPad.

The Ultra Retina XDR display uses advanced tandem OLED technology with two OLED panels and combines the light from both to deliver stunning full-screen brightness. Specifically, the new iPad Pro supports an incredible full-screen brightness of 1,000 nits for SDR and HDR content, or up to 1,600 nits for HDR. No other device in its class offers this level of extreme dynamic range. Tandem OLED technology allows for sub-millisecond control of the color and brightness of each pixel, making XDR more precise than ever.

Less than two weeks after Apple’s event, Microsoft did the same with the Surface Pro. At an event earlier this week, the company revealed the next generation of the Surface Pro with an OLED display. While the company hasn’t specified the display’s specifications, it’s said to support HDR and have a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It’s not yet known what kind of regular and peak brightness to expect.

With OLED displays, both the iPad Pro and Surface Pro can display true blacks—something that would be a dream for any of the traditional backlit panels they’ve used in the past. The displays will also display perfect contrast and incredible color saturation.

As OLEDs make their way from TVs to phones to tablets, it’s clear that they’re on the verge of making their way into every device we use in our daily lives. We’re just waiting for the iPad mini and MacBook Air to adopt OLED displays, especially since Apple has reportedly abandoned plans to include mini LED displays in the Apple Watch, perhaps after realizing that the best technology for a watch is OLED.

While these displays have been reserved for Apple and Microsoft's "Pro" tablets, OLEDs are now found in regular iPhones and many Android phones, so hopefully it won't be long before OLEDs make their way to tablets and laptops. As the big players jump on OLED, others seem to want to follow suit, and it's only a matter of time before LCDs disappear in favor of OLEDs.
