Huawei 'upgrades' smartwatch features in Watch GT4

Huawei Watch GT4 still has 2 versions of face size but adjusted: still keeping the 46mm model aimed at men but shrinking the 42mm version on GT3 down to 41mm in the new generation.

While the 41mm version retains the watch face frame design of the 42mm GT3 model, the 46mm model has a new look with octagonal beveled edges below the traditional round watch face. This design creates a sturdy, masculine look while still retaining the familiar watch shape to many people. This is considered a "worthwhile" upgrade point in this device compared to previous models such as GT2, GT3. In addition, the device still retains the round knob and a quick action button (accessing training modes) like the GT3, along with a numeric printed bezel.

Some of the advantages of GT3 are inherited on GT4 such as light weight despite using a metal frame, making the wearing feeling still comfortable enough, not causing discomfort in daily activities as well as the process of movement and training. Battery life is still long compared to the general level of the current smartwatch market, however, the process of using Watch GT3 and Watch GT4 shows that the later model has a shorter operating time than its "senior".

Specifically, in normal usage mode with a connection to the phone and continuous notification reception, the GT3 can last for 12-14 days, but in the GT4 this time is about 2 days lower. Meanwhile, AOD (Always On Display) mode will "burn the battery" faster, both models reduce the time to 7 and 6 days of use respectively.

In terms of measurement capabilities through sensors, Watch GT4 meets all necessary monitoring needs such as heart rate, blood oxygen concentration (SpO2), sleep quality, body temperature, stress level... Huawei said all sensors have been upgraded to become more accurate.

But for ordinary users, this will be very difficult to detect because the difference in results between previous generations is not much or insignificant, within the allowable range depending on the situation. Therefore, users do not need to put too much emphasis on this ability when deciding which smartwatch to buy to track their movement and body index.

The most important highlight among the sensors of the Watch GT4 is the new Huawei TruSeen 5.5+ technology, which is improved with eight photoelectric sensors, two groups of light sources, better AI algorithms and curved lenses. With this change, Huawei claims that the Watch GT 4 helps monitor heart rate during intensive exercise more accurately, with timely voice prompts or vibrations when the heart rate goes out of the safe zone.

In particular, the ability to measure and detect arrhythmia, ventricular fibrillation (opened depending on the market), and early warning of abnormalities in heart function is very important because it can help users anticipate risks related to heart attacks or other abnormalities.

Ventricular fibrillation (ventricular fibrillation) is an emergency heart rhythm disorder that prevents the heart from pumping blood normally and can cause sudden cardiac arrest, so it needs to be warned as soon as possible. Unfortunately, this device does not have an ECG (electrocardiogram) sensor like the Huawei Watch 4 Pro or Watch GT 3 Pro.

Watch GT4 uses Harmony OS 4.0 operating system developed by Huawei itself, supporting connection with both Android and iOS phones. However, iOS users seem to be at a slight disadvantage when they cannot quickly reply to messages/Facebook Messenger directly on the watch using text (pre-installed) or emojis, and there is no support for offline maps (view directly on the watch when there is no network connection).

All these features only appear when this smartwatch model is connected to an Android phone. In return, iOS-connected watches can answer calls from OTT such as Messenger, Zalo, but not with Android.

The 1.43-inch 466 x 466 AMOLED touchscreen is the same size and resolution as the GT3, rather than using the newer LTPO display technology found on the Watch 4 Pro. However, visibility in bright light is still very good, with rich colors even when viewing from different angles.

In addition to the necessary features of a notification display device with health monitoring, users can also "play" with Watch GT4 by installing some games or applications from the App Gallery application store (only applicable to Android).

In addition, the device supports NFC, so users can add magnetic cards (parking, elevator, door, etc.) to the watch's wallet application for use without having to always carry the card with them. However, this feature is limited to the market, currently only available with Huawei ID accounts registered in China and Malaysia. In Vietnam, this feature is promised to be available soon.

Huawei Watch GT4 has up to 4 versions of 46mm face with different colors, while the 41mm version (pictured) currently has 3, but may soon add new strap models to Vietnam this year. All models can have their straps changed simply thanks to the smart latch, with standard strap sizes.

Overall, the Watch GT4 will be a worthy upgrade if you own the GT2 model. As for the 46mm GT3, the choice is just a matter of which design you like better. Meanwhile, the new 41mm version offers a more elegant look than the 42mm generation.
