Through cooperation with leading countries in green transformation and sustainable development such as Denmark, Vietnam can learn from experience in building policies, laws, management, and utilizing resources, capital, and technology. From there, it can apply them appropriately to the country's practical conditions, contributing to the implementation of the commitment made by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).

Denmark's Aspiration, Determination and Vision

When visiting Copenhagen, the capital and largest city of Denmark, people often mention Copenhill, a typical architectural work, serving the people and a symbol of Denmark's green transformation. In fact, it is a waste-to-energy plant, worth about 650 million USD, inaugurated in 2017, which can process up to 560,000 tons of waste per year and provide electricity for more than 50,000 apartments and heating energy for 120,000 households.

In addition, Copenhill has zero emissions due to the use of carbon capture technology, recycling about 100 million liters of water per year during the treatment process, and about 90% of metals from waste will be recovered and reused. In particular, the waste after treatment will produce about 100,000 tons of raw materials that can be used for building roads and bridges.

Copenhill is also a tourist complex for adventurous travelers. The project has the world's largest artificial turf skating rink (in winter it becomes a ski slope) on the top floor, an 85m high climbing wall, a fully equipped restaurant and a unique bar. Currently, this place attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

To achieve such a typical project, we must mention Denmark's aspiration, determination and vision in nearly 50 years of green transformation, demonstrated in political commitments, policies, ambitious action programs and technological innovation capacity.

To fulfill the commitment to reduce emissions by 70% by 2030 (compared to 1990) and achieve net zero emissions by 2050, Denmark has recently focused on maximizing resources through public-private partnerships, energy transition, circular economy development, water resource management, smart city construction and the fields of agri-food, urban construction, transportation, industry and international cooperation on green transformation...

Effective, systematic and practical cooperation

Vietnam and Denmark have a tradition of cooperation in the field of green growth and sustainable development, achieving many outstanding achievements. Since 2011, the two countries have established a strategic partnership in the fields of climate change, energy, environment and green growth.

In 2013, Denmark and Vietnam established a Comprehensive Partnership, in which green transformation and sustainable development are always prominent topics in all cooperation in energy, health, agriculture and food, education, trade and investment, etc.

Currently, the framework of bilateral relations has become stable and substantive, with both diverse and in-depth cooperation areas, as evidenced by the fact that the two countries officially established a Green Strategic Partnership with 10 groups of overarching cooperation areas in November 2023.

These are important milestones, demonstrating the commitment and determination of the leaders and people of the two countries in green transformation and sustainable development. This is also a premise for long-term cooperation, not only for the benefit of each country but also demonstrating responsibility for the security and development challenges of humanity, specifically climate change and environmental degradation.

Regarding specific results, it is possible to mention the Vietnam-Denmark Energy Partnership Cooperation Program, which has been implemented since 2013 and is currently in phase 3 (from 2020-2025), achieving many substantive results. The two sides have developed and published Energy Outlook Reports, provided assessments and policy recommendations, contributing to promoting sustainable development of the energy sector towards increasing the exploitation of clean and renewable energy, and using energy economically and efficiently.

In addition, strategic cooperation programs in fields such as environment, agriculture, health, education, statistics, etc. have been and are being implemented effectively, systematically, with substantial results and increasingly towards green and sustainable standards.

In recent times, Vietnam has attracted many high-quality green investment projects from Denmark. For example, Lego's project to build the world's first carbon-neutral factory in Vietnam with a total investment of more than 1 billion USD. Or projects by Scancom, Pandora, Spectre, CIP, Vestas... have contributed to making Denmark the 22nd largest investor out of 141 countries and territories investing in Vietnam with a total registered capital of nearly 1.8 billion USD.

Most Danish projects are green investment and production, promote social responsibility, have widespread value, and can be considered models for high-quality investment projects, demonstrating Vietnam's commitment and determination in attracting green projects, aiming to achieve the Net Zero target by 2050.

Young Vietnamese Generation - An Important Force

The Joint Statement on the Vietnam-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership contributes to realizing the efforts of the two governments in promoting the green transition, raising global climate ambition, focusing on equitable green transition through multi-sectoral cooperation.

Based on the new cooperation framework, in the coming time, Vietnam and Denmark will continue to deepen and elevate the bilateral relationship to a new level. In the immediate future, the two countries will closely coordinate to implement the Declaration on the Establishment of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and successfully organize the Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit in Vietnam in April 2025.

At the same time, the two countries also strengthen cooperation in new areas with great potential such as digital transformation, renewable energy development, green production, cooperation, science and technology transfer, human resource training, focusing on areas serving the goals of green growth and sustainable development, combating climate change, etc.

However, green transformation and sustainable development are strategic and long-term issues. From making commitments to achieving goals is a long and arduous journey, requiring great determination and persistent efforts from the central and local levels to the people and businesses.

Vietnam needs to help people see clearly that green transformation not only brings practical benefits in gradually improving the quality of life, contributing to the sustainable development of the country, but also is a social responsibility and responsibility towards future generations. Therefore, first of all, it is necessary to do a good job of disseminating and propagating to people about the benefits, significance and responsibility of each individual and organization in green transformation and sustainable development.

In addition, it is possible to gradually research and incorporate appropriate content on environmental protection and green growth into educational programs and have policies to encourage the younger generation to participate in environmental protection activities, encourage research, ideas, initiatives, and green, clean and sustainable startup projects among young people.

Through many years of working with overseas Vietnamese, having the opportunity to work and interact with many experts, intellectuals, and young people both at home and abroad, I have realized that the young generation of Vietnam is very dynamic, creative, sensitive, quickly adapts and grasps the major trends of the world. If given the conditions and opportunities, the young generation of Vietnam will become an important force contributing to the green transformation process and sustainable development of Vietnam in the future.
