More than 8km of National Highway 22 from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3 interchange will be upgraded and expanded to 10 lanes, ensuring convenient traffic at the Northwest gateway of Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the pre-feasibility study report recently submitted by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport to the City People's Committee for appraisal, from 2025 to 2028, Ho Chi Minh City will upgrade and expand 4 gateway routes under the public-private partnership (BOT) method. Of which, more than 8km of National Highway 22, from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3, will be expanded to 10 lanes with a width of 60m, solving the traffic congestion and jams on the main route connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Moc Bai international border gate (Tay Ninh) and countries in the ASEAN region.
According to the observation of Giao thong Newspaper reporters, the first section of National Highway 22 at An Suong intersection currently has more than 10 spacious lanes, along with two underpasses connecting from Truong Chinh Street through the roundabout. However, this wide road only lasts a few hundred meters, from the pedestrian overpass area onwards, the road surface narrows to only 6 lanes.
Meanwhile, according to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, this is a gateway route, the demand for travel and freight transport is increasing rapidly, leading to a large traffic volume exceeding the capacity and service level of the route, frequent congestion, increased traffic accidents, especially at intersections at the same level...
At most times of the day, container trucks, trucks, passenger cars... are constantly passing through this route. In the photo, the amount of vehicles moving at 2:00 p.m. on February 13. It can be seen that, although it is not rush hour, the traffic is still quite crowded, at many times the vehicles are congested and move slowly.
Amidst the large buses and trucks, the motorcyclist is stuck in the middle, causing both traffic congestion and danger. This is a common sight on Highway 22 during rush hour.
The innermost mixed lane is also quite narrow, if a car moves in, the motorcyclist is forced to move close to the edge of the road or squeeze through the narrow gaps between cars. Many people share that every time they go through this section of the road, they always feel worried because even a small collision can lead to an accident.
According to the pre-feasibility study report, 8.03km of National Highway 22 passing through District 12 and Hoc Mon District will be upgraded and renovated to 10 lanes with a design speed of 80km/h for the 4 lanes in the middle and a design speed of 60km/h for the 6 lanes on both sides. The road cross-section is 60m wide along with corridors for green trees and technical infrastructure works suitable for the planning scale.
The route also has 7 overpasses built through 7 intersections on 4 high-speed lanes with little interruption, including the intersections of Nguyen Anh Thu, Nguyen Thi Soc - Nha Vuong; Le Thi Ha, Tran Van Muoi - Ba Trieu; Ly Thuong Kiet - Nguyen Van Bua; Nguyen Thi Nuoi, Duong Cong Khi - Le Loi. The beginning of the route connects to National Highway 1 at An Suong Intersection; the end of the route connects to Ring Road 3 at the intersection of Ring Road 3 - National Highway 22 under the Ring Road 3 project under construction.
The project will be implemented in 3 years, from now until 2028. In particular, it is expected that in the first quarter of 2025, the investment policy will be submitted to the competent authority for approval; in the third quarter of 2025, the feasibility study report will be prepared, appraised and approved; in the fourth quarter of 2025, procedures for selecting investors and signing project contracts will be carried out; in the second quarter of 2025 - third quarter of 2026, site clearance will be carried out; from the second quarter of 2026 - 2028, construction will be implemented, completed and put into operation.
The total area occupied for the project is about 49.25 hectares (District 12: 4.29 hectares, Hoc Mon district: 44.96 hectares). Of which, the affected area that must be cleared is 16.6 hectares in Hoc Mon district with about 1,362 households. The number of households that must be cleared is 392 households.
Once completed, the project, together with other transport projects that have been and are being implemented in the area such as Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3, Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 4, and Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai Expressway, will form a complete transport network of the city as well as the Southeast region, increasing capacity and efficiency of route exploitation, contributing to socio-economic development.
