On December 30, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health held a conference to deploy key activities of the city's health sector in 2025.
Reporting at the conference, nurse Lu Mong Thuy Linh - deputy head of the medical profession department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that up to now, there are 28 million nurses in the world, still lacking 10 million nurses compared to the health care needs of the global population.
In some developed countries such as Japan, the US and European Union (EU) countries, there is a serious shortage of nurses, forcing these countries to change their residency laws to recruit nurses from abroad.
In addition, according to the International Nurses Federation, after the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 20% of nurses have quit their jobs, leading to an increasingly serious nursing shortage.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City ranks 100th compared to other countries in the world in terms of nursing ratio at 37.15 people/10,000 people.
A recent survey by the Department of Health at hospitals and medical centers showed that the majority of new nurses working at hospitals have a starting salary of 5-10 million VND (accounting for 66.5%).
About 7% of newly hired nurses have a salary of less than 5 million VND, and the percentage of newly hired nurses with a salary of 10-15 million VND accounts for 25.9%.
This is what makes it so difficult for nurses to work in hospitals today.
According to Ms. Linh, the city currently has 6 universities that offer nursing training, graduating about 1,800 nurses each year. Tuition fees vary, the lowest is 42 million VND/year, and the highest is about 87 million VND/year.
Thus, on average, a nursing student will spend about 5-10 million VND/month for 4 years, which is equal to the salary of a new nurse working in a hospital.
"A new nurse entering the hospital will have to work for four years to be able to cover the tuition fees if she doesn't have to spend anything.
"This has led to difficulties in recruiting nursing students at universities in recent years," said Ms. Linh.
The City Department of Health proposed a pilot model of nursing assistants and dental assistants to support nurses in patient care.
This is to reduce the workload for nurses so that they can focus on specialized techniques for patients.
In addition, the city needs to supplement funding policies to attract students to the nursing industry.
2025 continues to launch 35 health sector projects
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc - Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee - highly appreciated and expressed his joy and pride in the efforts of the city's health sector in taking care of people's health.
In 2024, many hospitals achieved outstanding results and won many major awards. At the same time, the city also implemented many programs for people's health care and preventive medicine, contributing to the development of specialized medicine.
The Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee hopes that the health sector will continue to carry out key tasks in 2025 such as: implementing public investment, launching 35 projects with a total cost of more than 13,700 billion VND...
