The US has received more than 5 million early voting ballots in 39 states across the country, with just 3 weeks left until the national general election.
According to CNN, the above figures were compiled from data on voters participating in early voting before the November 5 general election, provided by local election officials in the US, analytics companies Edison Research and Catalist, scholars and non-profit advocacy groups. Experts said that more than 5 million early votes were equivalent to only about 3% of the total 158 million votes in the 2020 US presidential election.
Overall, Virginia, one of the first states to begin widespread early voting in this year's general election, still leads the nation with more than 708,000 early votes. More than 600,000 votes were cast before Nov. 5 in the battleground states of Michigan and Florida, while Pennsylvania had more than 400,000 early votes. An election official in Georgia said more than 300,000 early ballots were cast on Oct. 15, the first day of early voting in the state. That's 123% higher than the previous record for the first day of voting. Vice President Kamala Harris's Democratic Party has a slight lead over former President Donald Trump's Republican Party in the vote count ahead of the national general election in key states like Pennsylvania and North Carolina, according to data from the research firm Catalist. But the GOP has narrowed the gap since this time four years ago. Only four of the seven battleground states in this year's US presidential election have registered voters by party: Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. So far, North Carolina and Pennsylvania are the only states that have released official statistics on the large number of early ballots.
