The US has a series of new moves related to Asia, including President-elect Donald Trump's choice of ambassador to China and joint US military exercises with Japan and the Philippines in the East Sea.
Mr. Perdue speaks at a Trump campaign event in Georgia on September 24.
Reuters reported on December 6 that US President-elect Donald Trump said he decided to choose former Senator David Perdue for the position of US ambassador to China.
"He will play an important role in implementing my strategy for maintaining peace in the region and a productive working relationship with Chinese leaders," Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social.
Mr Trump previously announced he would impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods unless the country took further measures to stop the smuggling of the opioid fentanyl into the US.
During his campaign, he also threatened to impose a 60% tariff on Chinese goods.
Mr. Perdue (75 years old) was a senator representing Georgia from 2015-2021. He worked as a management consultant for 12 years, before becoming senior vice president of Reebok. He then worked at the textile company PillowTex and CEO of the discount chain Dollar General. He ran for senator in 2014.
The Washington Post previously reported that Mr. Perdue spoke proudly in 1994 about his years as an executive in Asia, dismissing criticism that he had become rich because the companies he led relied on overseas manufacturing.
But as he campaigned for re-election as senator in 2020, he avoided the issue, as an ally of Mr Trump, who has criticized businesses that outsource jobs overseas.

US conducts joint military exercises in the East Sea
In another US move related to Asia, the US Indo-Pacific Command said that on December 6, US forces and those of Japan and the Philippines conducted "maritime cooperation activities" in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone in the East Sea.
Accordingly, the exercise aims to enhance interoperability in tactics, techniques and defense procedures between the parties.
Regarding US military activities in the region, USNI News reported on December 6 that the US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is currently operating in the Philippine Sea, after leaving the East Sea on December 2.

The aircraft carrier has been deployed for nearly five months, after departing from Naval Station North Island (California) on July 11 and receiving orders to deploy to the Middle East on August 2.
On August 9, the aircraft carrier conducted exercises in the Philippine Sea with the Italian Navy's ITS Cavour aircraft carrier and was then ordered to accelerate its journey to the Central Command's area of operations.
