Midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc returned after injury and played the entire friendly match between The Cong and Hanoi FC on the afternoon of January 23.
Hoang Duc and The Cong will participate in a friendly tournament with three teams: Hanoi FC, Indonesian club Bali United and Korean club Daejon Hana Citizen, at Hang Day Stadium. At the press conference before the tournament yesterday, January 22, coach Nguyen Duc Thang said that Hoang Duc has recovered 95% so he will soon return to competition and reach his peak form. Previously, the midfielder born in 1998 missed the 2023 Asian Cup due to a left ankle injury.
In the match against Hanoi FC this afternoon, coach Duc Thang sent Hoang Duc onto the field from the start. He played the full 90 minutes but did not have a good feeling of playing, so he made many bad passes. In addition to Hoang Duc, center back Bui Tien Dung also played the whole match, while Nguyen Thanh Chung entered the field from the 81st minute. Both of them could not play with Vietnam at the 2023 Asian Cup because they had not recovered from their injuries.

This is the first match since the appointment of coach Nguyen Duc Thang (The Cong) and Japanese coach Iwamasa Daiki (Hanoi FC). Both sent many players onto the field for testing, and also did not have their strongest squad because they were both participating in the Asian Cup with their national teams. Hanoi was missing seven players: Pham Tuan Hai, Do Hung Dung, Do Duy Manh, Pham Xuan Manh, Hai Long, Van Truong, Van Tung. Meanwhile, The Cong was missing four players: Thanh Binh, Phan Tuan Tai, Truong Tien Anh and Khuat Van Khang.
In the first half, The Cong played better with many finishing opportunities belonging to Tran Danh Trung, Bui Tien Dung and Duong Van Hao but could not trouble goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan. They let Ha Noi create the most dangerous opportunity in the 30th minute, when Van Quyet crossed from the left wing for Denilson Pereira to tap in close but goalkeeper Quang The Tai reacted quickly to block.
Right at the beginning of the second half, Hanoi's goal was shaken after Nham Manh Dung's shot hit the crossbar in the penalty area. It was not until the second minute of injury time that Hanoi had a good chance when Denilson headed the ball against the crossbar from a left-wing corner kick, the ball bounced right to Brandon Wilson but the midfielder was surprised and headed it over the bar from close range.

After 90 minutes, the two teams entered the penalty shootout, with Hanoi kicking first. Van Quyet, Denilson and Dau Van Toan scored their goals. The Cong team had Bui Tien Dung and Hoang Duc shoot well, before Duong Van Hao put his shot into the right corner and was blocked by Van Chuan. However, in the last two rounds, Brandon Wilson and Thanh Chung both sent the ball over the bar, while Manh Cuong and Nham Manh Dung completed their mission to help The Cong win 4-3.
This result helps The Cong enter the final on January 27 and will meet the winner of the pair Daejon Hana Citizen and Bali United. On the same day, Hanoi FC plays the third place match.
