Many gardeners in Phu Yen are worried that more than 80% of gladiolus flowers are blooming late and cannot be sold in time for Tet. To have flowers to sell to people, traders have to import flowers from Da Lat.
On January 25, at Ngoc Lang flower village, Tuy Hoa city, a large flower growing area in Phu Yen province, the atmosphere was very deserted as this year people had no flowers to sell during Tet.
Sitting and sighing in front of a flower pole that has yet to bloom, Mr. Le Khiem (57 years old) said that the cold, rainy weather and continuous wind in the last 2 months of the year have been detrimental to the growth of the plants.
"I grow red and yellow gladiolus, and up to now, both sao have not yet budded. They will bloom after Tet, and if I sell them then I will definitely lose money. This year, I consider it a total loss while each sao I have to spend from 10 to 25 million VND on medicine and fertilization," said Mr. Khiem.
Mr. Dang Lap (63 years old) said that the price of gladiolus flowers sold in the garden to traders depends on the type: tiger tongue gladiolus costs 35,000 VND/bunch of 10 flowers; square-eared gladiolus costs 65,000 VND/bunch of 10 flowers, plump red gladiolus costs 40,000 - 45,000 VND/bunch of 10 flowers...
"This year, the price is the same as last year, but people have very little to sell because the flowers bloom slowly, everyone is worried. I have 3 sao but only 1 sao will bloom in time for Tet. Gladiolus flowers here are popular because they are suitable for the local climate, have bright colors, and last a long time," said Mr. Lap.
Ms. Nguyen Thanh Xuan - a trader (residing in Hoa Vinh town, Dong Hoa town) - said that every year she comes to Ngoc Lang flower village to buy flowers in large quantities to sell at markets in the town.
"From December 26-27, the gardeners will harvest to sell. A few days ago, I visited more than 10 gardens but only 2 gardens had flowers blooming right on Tet, the rest were blooming late. This year, the red and velvet gladiolus flowers are almost out of stock. I have also reserved a few gardens of square-eared gladiolus flowers but the quantity is not much, I have to get more Da Lat gladiolus flowers," said Ms. Xuan.
According to traders, the quantity of gladiolus in the province is quite small, not enough to supply local people, many traders have to import more gladiolus from Da Lat to sell. The price of red gladiolus from Da Lat for a bunch of 200 flowers is 200,000 VND, the square-eared gladiolus is from 40,000 VND - 45,000 VND/ bunch of 10 flowers.
Choosing to buy two bunches of gladiolus to display on Tet, Ms. Le Hoai Thu (a resident of Tuy Hoa City) shared: "Every year, people in my hometown have to make a vase of gladiolus to place on the altar of their ancestors. Because this is a flower of luck and gratitude. I bought two bunches of gladiolus grown by Ngoc Lang people to support the farmers in my hometown and the flower color is also very beautiful, the flowers are newly picked so the stems and leaves are very green."
According to Mr. Tran Van Tuyen, Vice President of Tuy Hoa City Farmers' Association, in Tuy Hoa there are more than 400 farmers growing trees and flowers to sell during Tet with a total area of about 120 hectares.
Of which, people planted more than 30,000 pots of chrysanthemums, 14,000 pots of kumquat trees, 13,000 pots of apricot trees and about 10,000 pots of other plants and flowers. Due to the prolonged rain in November and December 2024, the rate of flowers blooming on Tet holiday was low.
