Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman publicly criticized the referee after his team lost to England in the EURO 2024 semi-final.

However, in the 18th minute, England equalized 1-1 on a penalty kick before Watkins scored the winning goal for the "Three Lions" in the 90th minute. Speaking at a press conference after the match, Dutch coach Koeman expressed his dissatisfaction when his team was awarded a penalty for the first goal.

"What do you do as a defender? Dumfries just wanted to block the ball. Harry Kane had already finished and then their legs collided. It cannot be a penalty. These decisions by VAR and the referee really ruin football," said coach Koeman. Regarding the result of the match against England, coach Koeman commented: "We started well and then lost. That disappointed me. We had a hard time after the opening goal. The team did not control the game. We made changes in the second half and actually played well at times. But England's second goal was really impressive. That ended everything for the Netherlands. It's hard to swallow this defeat."
