Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, born in 1988, Viet Hung 3 area (Phu Lam commune, Doan Hung district) is known by many people for her dynamism, daring to think, daring to do, turning barren hill land into a four-season lemon growing model with high economic efficiency.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Viet Hung 3 area (Phu Lam commune, Doan Hung district) checks the quality of lemons before harvesting.
Ms. Huong shared: “In 2014, the Women's Union mobilized me to participate in training courses on crop restructuring and to visit and learn about some agricultural economic development models with high economic value in neighboring districts and provinces. Through practice, I realized that the four-season lemon tree is very suitable for the climate and soil conditions of my hometown, so I decided to borrow capital and convert the entire area of abandoned hill land of my family to grow four-season lemon trees." It is known that Ms. Huong's experimental model of planting 200 four-season lemon trees developed quickly, after about 6 months the trees began to bear fruit, and the first harvest yielded 3.5 quintals of fruit.
While working and learning, she sought ways to expand the model. Up to now, her family's 4 hectares of hilly land have grown about 3,000 trees, of which 1,500 trees have been harvested with a yield of 50 tons/year, after deducting expenses, the profit is 500-600 million VND.
Not only selling commercial lemons, Ms. Huong also grafts branches to sell seedlings to households in need. She enthusiastically shares her experience in caring for and instructs people on planting techniques, pruning branches, and fertilizing trees to help them grow well and produce high yields. According to Ms. Huong, four-season lemons bear fruit all year round, with stable yields. If planted for many years, the initial capital will decrease, but the profit of the following year will always be higher than the previous year if cared for according to the correct technical process.
