At present, people in Thuan Thien commune (Can Loc - Ha Tinh) have started harvesting shallots. The early season price ranges from 24 - 30 thousand VND/kg, making people very excited.
As one of the localities that harvest onions early in the district, since the end of September, people in Thuan Thien commune have started pruning and have now entered the onion harvesting stage.
Thuan Thien people start harvesting shallots from the end of September.
Ms. Vo Thi Minh (Cuu Quoc village) said: “This year, my family planted 3 sao of onions. Although there was a lot of rain during the pruning period, the onions were easily flooded, but because of good care, they were not affected. The good news is that at the beginning of this season, the onion price was higher than at the beginning of last year, so we are very excited. With the price at the beginning of the season of 30,000 VND/kg, so far, we have earned 10 million VND. In the coming time, we will continue to harvest green onions and take care of them to sell the onions."
After a long time at 30 thousand VND/kg, the price of onions at times dropped to 24 - 27 thousand VND/kg but was still high compared to previous crops, so people were very excited.
Ms. Ho Thi Thanh (Long Long village) shared: “Growing onions is hard work, requires a lot of effort, but in return, the prices are quite good in the first days of the season, so we are very happy. We don’t have to go to the market to sell because the traders come to buy right in the field.”
Mrs. Ho Thi Thanh's joy when the price of early-season onions is good this year.
In the field next door, Bui Thi Suong and her husband (Long Long village) also took advantage of the harvest time to deliver goods to customers on time.
“Because we don’t have time to sell at retail markets, we import wholesale to local buyers. Harvesting is also based on order quantity, so we are very proactive. On average, my family earns about 400,000 - 500,000 VND per day from onions,” said Ms. Suong.
Since the beginning of the season, the price of shallots has fluctuated from 24 - 30 thousand VND/kg.
With the advantage of being an easy-to-grow plant, with few pests and diseases, suitable for local soil and bringing high economic value, chives have become a commodity product that brings good income to the people. According to local statistics, up to now, the whole commune has 55 hectares of onions, of which 50 hectares are chives and 5 hectares are onions, mainly concentrated in the villages: Tay Ho, Long Long, Cuu Quoc, Lien Son, Truong Tien and Yen village.
Currently, in the whole commune, there are 5 households collecting onions to sell in major markets inside and outside the province. Thanks to that, onion growers in the area do not have to struggle to find consumers.
Harvesting 15 - 20 kg per day, Ms. Bui Thi Suong's family in Long Long village has an income of about 400 - 500 thousand VND.
