After the election campaign has ended, more than 35.3 million Argentine voters are ready to participate in the primary election scheduled to take place on August 13 (local time) to choose the official candidates to appear in the general election next October.
Argentina's National Electoral Authority announced that 17 pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates will participate in this primary election.
Representing the center-left ruling coalition Unión por la Patria (Union for the Fatherland) is the running mate pair of Economy Minister Sergio Massa and Cabinet Secretary Agustín Rossi.
Meanwhile, the opposition coalition Juntos por el Cambio (United for Change) has announced two presidential candidates: President of the Republican Proposal (PRO - the key party in the ruling center-right coalition from 2015-2019), Ms. Patricia Bullrich and Mayor of the capital Buenos Aires, Mr. Horacio Rodríguez Larreta.
Another notable presidential candidate is Congressman Javier Milei, a rising far-right figure in Argentine politics.
According to Argentine electoral law, candidates who win 1.5% or more of the vote will be eligible to continue participating in the official election next October.
This primary election is also an opportunity to screen candidates who will compete for new positions in Congress in the October election, when the Argentine legislature will have to replace 24 seats in the Senate (equivalent to 1/3 of the senators) and 130 seats in the House of Representatives (equivalent to 1/2 of the deputies).
Although it was only a primary election, this event still attracted great public attention.
This is the biggest test of the candidates' reputation ahead of the general election in October, especially in the context that this South American country is going through a period of macroeconomic volatility with a consistently high inflation rate.
Argentina's National Electoral Authority said more than 85,000 police and military personnel have been mobilized to ensure security for the primary election.
In addition, about 3,100 road vehicles, 12 helicopters, a C-130 transport aircraft and three naval ships were mobilized to serve security work at this event.
