Hanoi requires schools not to charge reservation fees

In recent times, the story of depositing to reserve a place when registering children for school has become familiar to parents in the capital. To get a place for their children to study at a private school, some people have to spend several million, even 10-20 million VND. This creates a bad image in education, causing many people to protest.

In a document dated March 22 regarding the strict implementation of primary school enrollment in the city, the Department of Education and Training informed that it will coordinate with relevant units to strengthen inspection, examination, and strictly handle violations if they are detected.

According to the regulations of most schools, the deposit fee paid by parents will not be refunded if the student does not submit the application for admission to the school. If the student enrolls, the school will deduct it from the expenses.

According to statistics, some private schools offer the lowest "deposit" currently, such as Phan Boi Chau High School (Ha Dong) 1.2 million VND/student, FPT High School (Thach That) 2 million VND.

Meanwhile, some private schools offer quite high admission fees, over 10 million VND, such as: Ly Thai To High School (Cau Giay) 11 million VND/student; Newton High School 12 million VND; Hanoi Academy High School (Tay Ho) 20 million VND.

In the 2024-2025 school year, it is expected that more than 50,000 students in Hanoi will not have a place in public grade 10 this year. This means that more than 50,000 parents will almost have to face a "not cheap" deposit fee if the Department of Education and Training does not thoroughly handle this deposit situation.

Six years ago, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training requested that private schools not charge registration and reservation fees, but then this practice continued.
