Hanoi will review the enrollment of junior high school students at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, according to the request of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training Nguyen Quang Tuan shared the above information on March 5.
Last week, the Ministry of Education and Training sent a letter to Hanoi about the plan to enroll non-specialized classes at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted. In it, the Ministry said that according to the 2019 Education Law, specialized schools can only be established at the high school level. Therefore, there is no middle school in the specialized school.
"Hanoi is requested to direct the enrollment of students into specialized high schools in accordance with regulations," the Ministry's document stated.
The secondary school system (commonly known as Ams2) of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted was established in 2009 by the decision of the City People's Committee. Each year, Ams2 recruits 200 students, receiving about 3,000-5,000 applications. Due to the large number of applications, the school sets many criteria on academic records for the first round of admission. Students must achieve 10 points in most subjects in 5 years of primary school to be able to register and enter the entrance exam round.
"The Department will work with specialized agencies to research and propose a special mechanism to the Ministry to be able to continue enrolling students because 'according to society's assessment, the quality of students in this system is very good'," said Mr. Tuan.

Last year, the Ministry of Education and Training issued a new circular on regulations for the organization and operation of specialized high schools. Compared to the old circular issued in 2012, the new regulation requires "no non-specialized classes in specialized schools", starting from this year.
After this regulation, all specialized schools nationwide announced to stop recruiting for the near-specialized system or high-quality classes.
The Resolution of the 2nd Conference of the 8th Party Central Committee in 1996 required that specialized classes not be organized in primary and secondary schools. Since 1997, the education sector has abolished gifted schools at this level. In recent years, although the name of specialized schools is no longer used, many localities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh Phuc, Nghe An, Bac Ninh... have key schools, high-quality schools, recruiting students based on exams instead of the usual household registration.
