According to TechSpot , Google has just announced the Humboldt Project - a remarkable milestone in the effort to improve internet connectivity across the Pacific. This $400 million submarine fiber optic cable project promises to bring faster, more stable speeds to the region, and marks an important collaboration between Google, government organizations and investment funds.

Humboldt’s highlight is the construction of the first direct submarine fiber optic cable between South America and the Asia-Pacific, stretching 14,800 km under the Pacific Ocean, connecting the coasts of Australia and Chile. This project opens new connectivity to the region, reinforcing Google’s commitment to Chile and South America.

By joining Humboldt, Chile will become a gateway for data from the Asia-Pacific region to South America. The project promises to increase geographic diversity, resilience and redundancy in the regional telecommunications network. Greater internet bandwidth and lower latency will be key to addressing the surge in data traffic brought by new technologies such as 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Google has highlighted the importance of submarine cables in boosting the economy, creating jobs, and improving the digital experience for businesses, organizations, and people. According to Analysys Mason, Google’s previous submarine cable projects in Latin America and the Caribbean contributed up to $178 billion in GDP growth and 740,000 new jobs to the region between 2017 and 2027.

Scheduled for completion in 2026, Humboldt has received significant attention from the US State Department, with a $15 million investment, demonstrating a commitment to greater economic cooperation in the region. The name Humboldt was chosen through a social media contest in Chile, honoring German explorer Alexander von Humboldt, who traveled across the American continent in the early 19th century.

Google’s Humboldt Project promises not only to significantly improve internet access in South America and Asia, but also to bring tangible economic benefits to the region. This is a major step forward in global telecommunications technology, demonstrating Google’s commitment to advancing development and connecting the world.
